Here I am

on my 91, charging voltage shows 10 on dashgauge/alt chks ok/new volt reg, now what?

My battery has been going dead due to low voltage from alternator or some other issue so I pulled alternator and took it to a rebuilder and he put it through all tests and came out fine. Told me what I've read here about ground problems with volt reg and poor regulators, and I bought a new one just to have. He brushed the paint off one mounting point, I ran a wire directly from that corner of the mounting point to the negative side of battery and the dash guage still reads 10 volts. It drops a little when I turn on lights etc. Any thoughts??? Thank for responses in advance. Seems like this subject has been beat to death. Also had my local "auto parts chain" check system with their meter. Kid says while its hooked up, "Its a V8 right?????" Are you kidding me? Then he says it shows voltage reg is no good. Don't trust that assessment as you can imagine.

A lot of times they test good on the stand but not all that great in the truck . You might have a bad fusible link .
You might need a set of brushes in the alternator

Diesel voltage regulator is specific. Gas engine won't work, so check which regulator you get.

Dodge Gas and diesel truck voltage regulators are the same, they ran them until early 91 models, just your basic 2 pin connector. After that it was integrated into the computer under the drivers fender. I would try another one, if you get a cheap BWD brand, I've had their electrical components bad from out of the box. There's not really much to it, alternator, voltage regulator and some wires! Gotta be one of those things!

LIke mentioned from previous post, the dummy gauge in the dash are pretty inconsistent, and I see the needle all over the place on my 92. .

The wifes suburban in her 96 jumps around as well , also the mini van ecms will work as well , so will a mini van alternator

NO NO NO ! Not all the voltage regulators are the same ! They all LOOK the same but inside they are not ! It has nothing to do with gas or diesel. . It has to do with what alt and electrical equipment the truck came with. I am not aware of ANY manufacture today that makes the 7. 5 amp regulator that our trucks came with.

All the rest use a 4 amp. The 4 amp can be bought anywhere. It is still not made the way the originals 4 amp ones were. The electronics inside will not take the load our trucks put on them ! Especially when the grid heaters kick in !!!

I was getting tired of replacing regulators all the time. So a few years back I had some 7. 5 amp regulators made.

I also had them put in an adjustment pot so YOU can adjust the voltage to your desired voltage. Why you ask ?????

Because not all batteries are the same either. If you use deep cycle or heavy equipment batteries in your truck. You need to charge them at a different voltage than you would for a modern thin plate automotive battery. I had 250 of these regulators made. I still have about 120 of them left . I get $24. 50 for them and ship them in a small flat rate box. The vary first thing I would do is put one of my regulators on when I have a low voltage probelm. I also have ALL

the parts to rebuild the alt's as well. They are simple to rebuild no special tools required . Just need a little common sense. I will make a video on how to rebuild them if I get enough requests to do so. Send me an email if anyone has interest in the parts I mentioned above... ///Terry

Hey, hey!! Easy, MysteryMan!! Don't blow a gasket or some stiches!!! :-laf Yeah, I looked up the part numbers from Orielly's and NAPA, and they say to use the same voltage regulator on the Diesel as the Gas..... I know there used to be a difference between the 60amp and 90+amp alternators, hence my comment... .

I'll be contacting you... .

Okay then, I'll be checking alternator output first with a volt/ohm meter. And then I'll check the voltage reg, and probably buy one of those special jobs from "Mysteryman" even tho my alternator/starter shop here has been very thorough with their work. I took the alternator off and he put it thru their testing procedures. Thanks for all the responses. My apologies for not checking back in recently as I was beginning to wonder if I'd get any response. I promise to post what I find and what corrected the issue unlike some of the posters who ask for help. Oh, and I'll check the fusable link as well.
