Quick background

Ran out of fuel last week. I know, I'm a dope. Went out of town with it right at E and came back thinking I had 20 miles or so left. Didn't realize a fried had borrowed the truck and drove it 10-15 miles w/o putting diesel in. Nice friend.

After a couple of days working on it sporadically, I cracked the injectors, bled the lines, replaced fuel filter. Figured I'd drive it today on a 250 milr round trip to blow the air out of the system

Started fine. Made it about 60 miles, and then it died. opened up the FF can and put fuel in. It started and I made it another 2 miles. Now it will not start again.

Any thoughts while im on the side of the road? I have a handful of tools with me. Fortunately I have laptop and internet connection as well

What year truck? Stock or modified? Need more info.

Sounds like it might be sucking air into the system from somewhere.

2003. not mods. It's so noisy on 95, I can't hear the lift pump, but not sure how i would have made it 60 miles if it was bad.

another note. can it be something with the fuel control sensor whatchamacalit.

Lastly, not sure if it is related, but i noticed in my drive this morning that my cruise control light would come on, but I couldn't set a speed. May have nothing to do with it, but it seems strange that they all happen together.

Cracking a fuel line on either side of the filter would tell you if the lift pump is working .
You might want to state your location , maybe someone is in the area that can help .
You had a chance to fill it up haven't you ?
The LP is only going to run for a few seconds after turning the key on .

If you had to pour fuel in the filter housing I'll bet the lift pump is not pumping. The truck will run without the lift pump working if there are no leaks in the lines back to the tank. It's probably not good for the VP but they will run. If the pump is out a full tank would also help keep it going. bg

I'm in maryland on 95 near Joppatown. I put about 8 gallons in it, which should be fine. Was going to stop at the next pull off and refill, but am 2 miles from the exit.

his truck is an 03, CR truck, not VP.

I have a brand new 3rd gen fuel pump if you need it. its the one on the block like you have, not the tank one. let me know if you want it. I was going to use it for a trial pump for a second gen, but changed plans and it has sat on the self since. 612-701-2843

What's the CR versus VP?

I have the version that needs the U-Joints replaced 3 x's in 50k miles. Just kidding. Not about the U joints, just the relevance.

I'm sorry, I missed the 03 all together. Your truck is common rail system, the big pump pressurizes a common pressurized header to which all injectors are connected, has electronic controlled injectors. The VP pump does the injection on the 2nd generation trucks via timing/injector lines from pump to each injector. Yours will self prime though where the 2nd generation were a pain to prime sometimes even if the lift pump is working. Good luck. bg
