Question about 4th generation trucks

AGM coach deep battery experience.

Got to take the truck for a nice long ride this weekend. Since the winter sucked for snowmobiling, I had plenty of time for a new project. I live in NY, the car had to stay in North Carolina until it was mostly fixed and the salvage title was released. That finally done, it's time she came home.

Interesting little fact. On the way down unloaded with the trailer, I got 11. 9 MPG which pretty much sucked#@$%!. On the way back, loaded, 13. 9 MPG. And yes, I kept the speed the same. Got to love how much wind those rear ramps catch. I would never have thought.

Interesting fuel use story. years ago I had a Chevy Citation The best fuel economy I ever got was with a canoe on the roof!!!!

That car has quite a snout on it. Looks like fun :)

Cummins are weird sometimes in the fuel economy. Is there an altitude change?

That was my thought. Is North Carolina actually uphill from New York? Even if you can't see it or feel it, if the elevation changes overall, it makes a big difference.

That snout holds yet another straight 6 which yes, is a lot of fun. This being the M version has way too much power as it is. I cant wait to put the twin screw supercharger on! This is my first BMW and probably my last unless it is another of these cars. This car is super easy to work on yourself. A great first fixer upper car. I am actually looking at purchasing a convertible this week and fixing it for my mother.

As far as altitude goes, I had to travel through the Pennsylvania mountains and the Appalachian Mountains on this trip so the overall 500 foot rise in altitude seems insignificant to mee. For every up, there was a down. I can only figure that the ramps on the trailer were acting as a sail and the car on the trailer directed it over them. Guess it didn't matter about the extra 3000 pounds.

the ramp is a sail!! i have a similar trail with about a 5 foot tall ramp. that thing holds me back in term of wind!! even under 5k pounds

yet i can get a different trailer with a large trencher, and larger trailer and weigh about 8-9K and hardly even notice its there.

I pulled our buggy with these giant ramps up in the air and pulled my 30 foot 5th wheel and the mileage was not that much different the ramps are a big drag.

It's amazing what wind resistance can do to a tow. I hauled a large storage shed last fall about 30 miles, loaded it was 12' wide and 15' tall. In 5th. gear on the down hill my boost was 20# on the level 25# and up hill it was 30# it was the hardest pulling light load I ever pulled.

I have pulled some moderate high profile loads and even down big hills, it's rare to use the exhaust brake.

If I ever have to go on a long trip with the trailer unloaded, I think I am going to just pull the ramps right off. All it takes is just pulling a pin and the bar slides right out. For 5 minutes of work, I'm sure I'd grab another 4 mpg!
