Can Am DS 450??

I saw the same video but it was against a smart car. The thing I find suspicious, or things, is notice the amount of rust coming off the Old Chevy makes you wonder how sound the frame is also around 1:00 on the video watch thefront fender where it meets the door and rocker there is about 50 lbs of dirt/ rust that pours out. The same exact thing happened in the smart car crash. Thats alot of dirt for such a clean looking car. The other kick about the smart car accident was that the Chevy knocked the smart car about 30 feet to the side. Be real great when you get tossed off a bridge or into an oncoming 18 wheeler

I was really surprised at the amount of damage on the old cheby. To see the dash move almost to the roof makes me wonder how much torch work was done on that old car to " help" it fold up. As far as the rust on the Cheby, that normal right?:-laf:-laf Randy

I was surprised at the damage the 59 sustained. I just figured the big old heavy cars would fair much better. On another note did you see the Smart Car vs the Mercedes C class video that followed next. The Smart car took a big hit but the cage seemed to be intact. (However, the laws of pyshics do apply and the Smart was propelled backwards. )

The reason I mentioned this is that a friend driving a Smart car did a head-on with an Accord Monday evening and came out bruised but without serious injury. Apparently, they are engineered well and have a high safety rating.

I'm still waiting to hear from her husband the details. That said, I do like the security my large truck provides.

Here is a quote from the article that accompanies the video:

"Contrary to Internet suspicions, the IIHS assures us that the antique Chevy wasn't a ringer: There is indeed an engine in the car, and the red cloud of dust that shows during the slow-motion replays isn't rust, merely 50 years of road grime. "

Also, here is another video of a crash of a Smart car. I think it's pretty impressive.

I confused the belair and smart car tests. Howeever while reviewing everything and watching some more of the crash tests I did notice one disturbing thing. When 2 current model cars collide it looks like the smaller one always gets hurt a lot more. It looks like when the reinforced interiors finally touch each other the smaller ones really takes a beating. Guess thats the whole physics thing...

The IIHS isn't the government. IIHS is an independent group supported by money from Insurance companies. Insurance companies pay for IIHS to research cars adn safety so that the insurance companies can make sure they're charging the right premuims based on damages that are likely to occur. So, again, they aren't the government, they're much worse. That's why, IMHO, Insurance is THE biggest legalized gambling in the world and all of us that carry it are participants, the part the suck is that the house (insurance companies) have so much money that they have all the cards stacked in their favor. $0. 02
