Here I am

One week on my PDR HX-50/55 Hybrid.

Attention: TDR Forum Junkies
To the point: Click this link and check out the Front Page News story(ies) where we are tracking the introduction of the 2025 Ram HD trucks.

Thanks, TDR Staff

Flames out the stacks ?

need allot of input please--air filters???

I ran a Hybred 50 from Scheid and it was the fasest spooling big turbo that I have ever ran. It also made big boost 60+ in third gear. At that time my gage only went to 60!:D

Thanks J. R. Good info to know.

My situation is this...

My HX40 is bone stock, not a hybrid of any sort, with a 16 cm^2 exhaust housing. On the street, Comp on 2x3 for normal

driving, I rarely have any EGT issues, unless I try going 70 MPH or faster up any decent hills, then EGTs will pass 1000*, which I

know isn't anything to worry about. But... when towing my dads Toyota pickup on our hunting trip last October, even on level

highway, my EGTs were consistently 900*+ with Comp on 2x3. When I drag race, which is only a few times a year, my HX40 has

way nasty lag :( My fear with such a large turbo as an HX50/55, even a hybrid, is that towing anything would be almost

unbearable EGT wise, unless I was going up a good hill in order to get that large of a turbo to spool enough to make good boost

numbers.

Maybe I'm just being too paranoid here... but I would hate to spend that kind of $$ only to decide it's the wrong turbo for my

needs afterall.

Thanks,

Tom

Tom,

I suggest sending your HX40 to Piers and have him re-work it to his PDR HX40 specs. This is what I did. It spools fast and your don't have to worry as much about it blowing up. It's only about $150 to do it.

I was told when i ordered mine that it was'nt meant for a tow rig. It's a play or comp turbo, excellent for everyday use, but not for heavy constant towing? Guys instead of asking people who give opinions, just call them up and fire away with your questions, I bother Al everyday and he treats me awesome, he could'nt be nicer!

Hufnpuf... Your point is well taken. I could call Al or Piers (don't like to bug them) and I'm sure they will give me an honest opinion. However, as more of these new turbos get out, real world feed back from other TDR members help validate performance, with different trucks, set-ups, location, elevation, to help us better make a purchase commitment. .

I for one live at 5700' elevation, and can only run a PDR HX-40. Any current larger turbo that I know of will not spool very well and has a lot of lag... I have no doubt that this turbo will perform well at lower elevations, the big difference is I think everyone wants to know " regardless" of elevation, how does it compare with a HX-40. I hope to in the near future be able to R&D one for high elevations, low elevations, and EGT's etc.

As I am not planning to go to twin turbos at this time, I am optimistic this maybe the ticket I need to take me to the next level. Oo.

Steve

Like Hufnpuf I too was told this probably isn't the ticket for towing. If you are planning to tow I would suggest waiting till more of these turbos are in and more feedback is forthcoming. I know Piers mentioned that he was going to try some towing with this turbo on his truck and see what it can do. Since I have yet to ride in a truck with a 40 I can't say whether this turbo will work.

Heber ram, I have heard horror stories of HX-40's at that elevation. ;)

Hemi, Prices do change, It might be more like $300. 00+ depending on evaluation.

just a heads up

Tom ... this is from Al on the spool up:

on the 12v the spool up is 100 rpm longer than the hx40 so its pretty good for a large turbo it runs 100-125 degrees cooler than the hx40 and the max boost we have seen so far with it it 60psi this is on our race truck.

My problem is I can get >1500 degrees. I don't know if Al is referring to the SOTN HX40-16 or the stock version.

Forrest

edit: just heard from Al. The 100 rpm longer is compared to the SOTN/Piers HX40!!! That means it's close to the spool up of the stock HX40. :D :D :D

Just a FYI

A used turbo upgrade is 400. 00. I had my 35 done with <5k miles and that is what it cost me. They dont just do the mods and send it on its way anymore. They check it all out and make it right. I think if the turbo is brand new it would be about 200 but I would call PDR to verify.

Here, here HeberRam! I agree completely with this comment. While I have zero doubts that Piers, Al, or any other of the

excellent vendors we have on the TDR will give a completely honest opinion of their products based on our individual needs

and circumstances, actual real world working feedback is equally important.

I do not tow regularly, as a matter of fact, I own nothing to tow! In the 2 1/2 years I have owned my truck, I have towed precisely

twice: my dad's Toyota 4x4 on hunting trips both times, I'm guessing a total of <6000 pounds total towed weight. So,

frequent towing is not a concern of mine when looking at a larger turbo.

My truck is my one and only mode of non-foot powered transportation, so I would have to rent a car for the ???

days/weeks it would take to send my turbo up north to have it Piersified. And since it is 2 years old with ~35K miles on it... it

would likely cost pretty big $$. I'd rather buy a new turbo (larger than an HX40 of any sort) and sell mine for probably close to

what it would cost to have it Piersified.

Thanks for all the info guys :)

... . I just found this thread.

Looks like this is a very viable big single for the non-twins crowd... . the 40 still scares me... . but that's just me.

Well done Piers!

Matt

I didnt buy the HX40 only because they are fragile when run hard. I know myself better than to take it easy. I wish i was al ittle less abusive,i love the PDR 40's quick spool up.

I am concerned that a 40 would blow up... . especially given its relatively shaky past.

The track record of the PDR-40 is very impressive, however.

I am not aware of anyone..... Oo. Oo.

I blew one up(not Piers fault). I had the wastegate set to open @ 36-38psi. I could hit 40 psi with 370's. I took out my 370's and put some EDM'd injectors in. Well... . I hit 56-58 psi with the wastegate open and bent the shaft.

I was way overfuled for a 40. Then I moved on to a 50 hybrid and exploded the compressor. Then twins. No turbo failures since moving to the twins. But I have outgrown them.
