Here I am

One week on my PDR HX-50/55 Hybrid.

Attention: TDR Forum Junkies
To the point: Click this link and check out the Front Page News story(ies) where we are tracking the introduction of the 2025 Ram HD trucks.

Thanks, TDR Staff

Flames out the stacks ?

need allot of input please--air filters???

I think we got a little off the subject with injectors... I would like more feed back regarding the performance of the HX-50/55 from Chipstein or any others that have them.

Thanks, Steve

I tried for a long time to avoid twins because I thought they were too expensive. The money I wasted trying the 40, H2E (paid twice), and B1 adds up to well more than a good reliable set of twins.

Then I ended up with twins afterall because no single would live. Ah, the lessons learned along the bombing road. :)

Exactly!

After watching everybody explode singles, and the price of a B-1, which had yet to been proven at the pulling track last year, that is the reason I went with twins.

It was a lot of money, but I learned the "Pay me now, or pay me later" deal with clutches.

I'm just wondering what kind of mileage you guys with twins are getting. Obviously it depends on how much you can keep your foot out of the throttle.

Thanks,

Doug

I get about 18.

I think with smaller D valves and a "normal" tq plate, there is no reason why you couldn't get better mileage than with a single.

Keep in mind, 99% of people who put twins on, are instantly going to up the fuel to get smoke back.

Yea, thanks to RR for testing on the pulling track, AFTER I bought twins!

How the heck do you get 18 MPG???? I can barely get 12 w/ my truck and I have an hx-40. Do u just drive it like a grandma? I mean I have gotten 15 one time on the highway and no my air cleaner is not dirty. I will even try to not smoke alot and keep the boost down and mileage still sucks.

Here one for you, I have really seen no difference in mileage with the Twins, I lost a little with the 370's... . slight, then gained a little back with Timing, here are some stats for you. 98' Q/C, S/B, 2WD, 3. 54 gear, 265/75/16 tires, 70 MPH@2K, no wind, level ground, EGT's are 600 and boost is 2-3 PSI. Touch the throttle and response is fine, push it to 1/4 and it's to 10-15 PSI then jam it and within 2 seconds(or less) it's at 60... ... . Does this tell you what you want to know. I like singles for there ease of install, there are plenty out there, weather it's a PDR 40, B-1, PDR 50/55 they are fine, you just need to ask yourself, were am I at and were do I want to be.

Gene(Sled Puller) has some really good points on the plate and driving, and he knows how I think too, as more fuel is now needed!

Jim

Heck I want twins. I have already got the hx55, but I keep breaking stuff. I have gotta use this truck everyday. It can't be sitting in the drive waiting on parts and 1300-1400 ft tq ain't gonna help nothing.

Okay, back on subject -TURBOS

ONE BIGGUN!

Can somebody throw down some fast/approximate numbers on the HP limits the various turbos can be expected to support? The 40, H2E, B1 and the 55 hybrid fer example.

"Support" to me means- deal with daily, no fuss no muss, no crossing the fingers everytime maximum boost is called for dependable performance.

My research to date has indicated that a properly tweaked 40 will be enough for me. Yeah I know there's no such thing as ENOUGH--but I'm trying to be reasonable with one truck and no backup.

When I get the second CTD- all bets are off. That'll be the fuel-it-till-it-breaks puppy. :D

Heck I want twins. I have already got the hx55

Not that I'm any kind of expert, but I really doubt a 40/55 combo will work good for Twins, this setup has been done before without sucess. An HT3B/35 is a better suited combo, but call your cam guy and ask them... my 2 pennies.

Jim

Well thats what I thought too Jim, but everyone I talk to says keep the HX-55 cause I was about to sell it and get a HT3B. Jeff Garmon and CR Roth at BD both said to keep th3 55 and use a 40 not a 35. Jeff uses the 40/55 combo on his race truck. And yeah I have thought about picking up a cheap 1st generation dodge to go crazy w/ my truck. Looking more and more tempting!!

I think that any combo is not the right combo, however, remember THIS THREAD?

The result was a very happey TDR member.

"Drivability is awesome. This is a stump puller's system, not a high revving-high hp system. "

It might not work as well as Jim's but Jim, J. R. and my idea are closer then what Mr. Murray had in mind. He loved his system, even though it was not set up to deliver the HUGE boost numbers like J. R. is looking for/needing.

Andrew

P. S. That thread was fun to read again. I have done TONS of homework on twins since then, and kinda made me chuckle at how green I was.

Don't know Jeff Harmon but I do know J. R. and Christian and if they say it will work then heck go for it, If you do we need some really good data on it for future reference.

Jim

Update

I can't be any happier. Everything is working great. For the last 4 days I have been running with the UFM on 1x3 and think this is a great setting for every day driving. No blown head gaskets, yet. ;) I really need more fuel... . can't get the EGT's above 1300. Oo. Oo.

Chip, I'm really glad to hear such a positive report so far. A non-TDR Dodge buddy in Sacramento is getting one of these for his 96 auto real soon, and since he currently has Piers HX40 hybrid, I am really excited to hear his report of the differences between those two turbos.

Tom

Yes, Tell us more. How much Boost are you seeing cruising down the freeway? What RPM does it spool up???
