Ordering new trailer, "spread axles?" what do you think

Brake Smart beeping

If you saw my other post, I need to replace bearings since they are the wrong size...

I already looked online some and all I can find are China-made bearings (and their steel used to suck)... looking for a name brand (Timken/NSK/Koyo/Bower, etc)... anyone have an online source?

Thanks,

Steve

Well, I ordered bearings from Grainger.com (you need an account, which I have)... cost around $160 shipped for NTN bearings.

I had to order the seals from another place, so I ordered China-made bearings for my boat trailer while I was at it (cost me $28 for all of them)... the boat trailer with boat might weigh 500#s loaded, if that.

I also bought tubeless rims for the boat trailer at the local TSC... I have been holding onto two new 4. 80x8 Carlilse tires for better than 5 years (stored in a black plastic bag)... so I finally got those mounted.

The bearings on the boat trailer have been bad since I've owned it (since around 1992)... but I never towed very far, and it was not heavy. They were bad, grease had so much water in it that it started to bead up when I was cleaning the hubs! I have a set of bearing buddies for this trailer, so that should prevent this in the future.

I still have to pick up seals for the boat trailer... it uses an odd axle (3/4 inch spindle).

I'm also changing tires on the RV this weekend... !

So I got a full weekend ahead if I get everything that I ordered...

Bearings manufactured in China and Russia are very popular and function well... . I don't believe there is a US bearing manufacture left that actually manufactures here... . My son, was looking for some bearings for a Federal project... . and country of manufacture was important... they have a pecking order of where stuff has to come from... . the best he could do for the bearing he was looking at was Japan... .

The bearing manufactured in Japan, a favored nation was $123,450 each... . there were 64 pieces in the project. . a quote from a very good China manufacturer was $28,000 and some change as I remember... . almost 100K cheaper... BTW the engineered spec on both bearings was the same... Had China had ""most favored Nation"" status at the time they would have got the business...

I import several thousand bearings a year for HD Clutches... we have had no problem with bearings from 3rd world countries... our main issue is customers not putting grease in them down the road or using the incorrect grease... . I wouldn't be afraid of the import.....

I don't fret any country's bearings other than China's... I've had VERY bad experiences with them. I've had experience that indicated they were not hardened properly, resulting in an extremely short lifespan... nothing to do with grease.

My bearing of choice is Koyo, followed by Timken and NTN. Japanese bearings have been know for their quality for years...

Got all the bearings from Grainger today... not bad for ordering Tuesday!

They are all NTN, and USA made...

At least part of my intentions will get completed this weekend!
