TIG welding copper

weld pictures, how am I doing so far?

I need to buy a few tools (who doesn't?)

I need a tap ( for the pyrometer I'm about to order) and I aslo need a set of metric combination wrenches.

My local hardware store has SK for Big$ or some really hokey looking stuff for literally 15% of the SK price. I need to find a good compromise between high end price and low end quality. I used to go to Sears for stuff like this, but they moved out of Boulder a year or two ago.

Where do you buy tools?

Thanks, Dave

i use this group all the time for my business. they are very reasonable on most items. J & L Industrial

i haven't used their online catalog too much so i am not sure how easy it is to navigate. their main catalog is over 2" thick.

hope this helps

Snap-On or MAC. I used to use Craftsman until they started giving me refurb crap whenever I broke a tool. With Snap-On or MAC I pay more, but I get a new tool if I break one and they send a truck to my front door.

not on line , but..

IF sears moved out , is there a lowes or home depot nearby they carry tools also. I am sure you could get from any of these places on line also.

Just my opinion, but I would put SK in the same class as Snap-On or Mac. Maybe even better for some of their designs (for my money, there is no better 1/2 inch rachet on the market than those from SK). Again, just personal opinion.

For those type items I would choose one of those already mentioned. If you start looking at woodworking tools and machines, look to Amazon. Their Tool Crib of the North subsidiary is very competively priced, no taxes, and free shipping on many items.

Just make sure they are name brand and made in USA. Most of what I've seen from them is chinese or jap junk that will break the first time you use it. Unfortunately, you'll also bust your knuckles and ruin the bolt when it breaks! Stick with named brand American made tools!

First of all, I moved this thread to the general diesel forum because I didn't see why it was in 3rd gen. You might also get more responses. (I also didn't want to bury it in "other" either)

Sears is OK if you have one that's convenient to get to. I don't think I would do the mail order Sears route though because things do break. It would suck to have to mail stuff back and wait.

Check out your local hardware store and see what they have. Often they have a similar guarantee as Sears stuff, just not the wide array of large sets.

Sears used to be middle of the road, but have went down hill. Especially there pro series. And then you have to drive to a store to return it. Which is an hour away for me. Never really liked their tools anyway. SK used to be top of the line. But they were bought out several years ago and I won't buy them anymore. Mac, Matco, Snapon,Cornwell, and Wright are the only tools I buy.

Very true you must know what your getting

I'll buy anytool that seems high quality. My box has quite an assortment, from a $110 snap on breaker bar to a ratchet I bought from my local Napa store. The ratchet is sold under the name Titan, has 1/2 drive on one side, 3/8 on the other and very fine teeth. I love that thing, I can't break it! Plus my napa store is VERY good about replacing tools you buy there whether they have a warranty or not.

Anyway, Mac, Matco, snap-on, Cornwell, SK, Wright tool etc all make AWESOME tools. SK did have a little dip in quality for a little, but my most recent SK purchases have been VERY high quality.

For my 6th birthday my dad bought me a Wright tool box, a set of SK standard wrenches, Wright nut drivers, Wright 3/8 and 1/4 drive sets. I still have all of the tools and have not broken any of them, and they all look like new.

Craftsman has been sort of ******* me off lately, I had my 3/8 ratchet replaced for the 9th time in 3 years this past week. When I took the ratchet in they had a roller cab behind the counter, it was FULL of broken 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 drive craftsman ratchets, I just started laughing when the guy opened the first drawer, he tried not to laugh, but he cracked a big smirk...

Oh well, I am tired and my entire post probably makes no sense

I almost hate to say it but Harbor Frieght is worth looking into for some tools. There's a store in Portland where I was able to hands-on their stuff and they've got a line that they call 'professional' (whether they are or not) that are well made smooth feeling wrenches. I had only seen the worst of Chinese junk before and this stuff caught my attention when I could get a full set of metric combo wrenches for $19. 95, or some 3/4" drive stuff that I hardly ever use but need bad when I need it for less than $30. a set. For all of the seldom used hand tools like stubby wrenches or large up to 2 1/2" box/open wrenches they can't be beat and the tools wil do the job, especially the ones that aren't part of my every day toolset. I even got a 1/2" impact there that outtorques my Ingersoll 235 for a sale price of $29. 95.

If it's for homeshop give them a look.
