Ok I understand a 26001 lbs needs a CDL but why only rate the 5500 to 26K? I could see having an option for 33K or 26K on the 5500 trucks, I hope they do that actually. Anybody else ****** or hacked off by this?

I supose it doesn't really matter, I tow at almost 26K all the time with my 3500 dully, and a 4500 or 5500 doesn't really help much. Maybe Ill get a class 8 truck instead :-laf

My truck is tagged for 18K, but in MN the truck DOES NOT carry the trailer. So my trailer is tagged at 21K. Still a little shy sometimes.

A 5500 will be better for me... 'bout this time next year. I seriously doubt the lowly 26K is gonna slow me down much.

In some states, if the truck is rated at more than 26,000 you have to plate it for that amount... . when doing so would require anyone who gets behind the wheel when this truck is used as a work truck, to have a CDL...

We own an F550 and I know a fleet of almost 500 F550's, this fleet wouldn't be able to put CDL drivers into the cab of these trucks... .

DC is looking for the fleet buyers that currently own a Chevy, or Ford... . and most of these fleets don't have a CDL driver in the fleet... . Look at all the citys, counties, and state level agencies using these trucks for all kinds of stuff, and would never buy it if they had to put CDL drivers in them... From my point of view this is nothing but good business sense... .

We do have 2 3500 dually pulling trailers that weight 22K lbs... . this combined weight require a class A combination CDL without air brake endorsement, the same license required to drive a semi except for the air brake endorsement... I'm ordering a 5500 as soon as I can and a second one by year end if the first works out well..... to replace one of these 3500's and the F550 with almost 450K miles.

Usually the states require the truck to be licensed to it's full GVW not GCW. So all the customers that are using them as stand alone vehicles will be way under the CDL requirement at 17,500 lbs GVW. However if you tow with it, then yes you will need the higher capacity tags.

Since the 4500/5500 will no doubt be very closely related, you would think the ratings could be spread out more. The CDL worry worts could buy the 4500 rated at 26,000 lbs GCW and the CDL drivers could buy the 5500 rated at more.

That is why I have to go to a bigger truck. I was hopping like all of you that the 5500 would be more then a one ton truck. I was hopping for around 30k to 40k. That is why I'm making the one ton in to a play truck when My Sterling L8500 Comes in. The Nice thing is the truck is only Costing my $85,000 with every option out there and even a sleeper. And Yes Sterling and freightliner are DC Now. So i'm not a sellout yet. :-laf :-laf

Sorry it is taking so long for me to get back. I get the truck June 4 2007 Because of the new fuel. The truck and trailers GVW should be around the 60,000 to 70,000# mark I'm Hopping. I haul Oil Field equipment and The dodge is always over worked. If you want to see pics Go to the company web site http://continenthotshot.com
