newf limo, need some advice.....

Tires

Upgraded my 4 year old K6-233, 64 megs ram and 2 2-gig drives to a P3-667, 256 ram, 20gig UDMA-66 and other goodies.

Why did I wait so long? Maybe because this time it cost all of $225 to do the whole thing... Wow. . . can't beleive it. This is SOOOOO much faster :)

Not to mention that with Win98, my network managemnet utils work, the USB ports work, and I can finally let my kids play their 3D games they got for christmas... LAST YEAR...

Anyway... So cool... it's a great thanksgiving thing for me :)

Bombing

Moving up from that K6-233 will be just like adding injectors, an EZ and 4" exhaust to your truck. I run a Celleron 600 at 900mz, it's a kick. :D :D :D

bomb my puter long time ago

1Ghtz 512 RAM / 40 gig HD / 16Mb graf card DVD/ROM / CDRW / zip 250/ 4 USB ports / firewire/ sm-r1 smart card reader/

Screams... ... ... ... ..... !!!!!!

That's cool... But on my budget, I had to go with older stuff.

It is SO nice to be able to do stuff without the it going into terminal swap zone :)

Next, however, is 128megs more ram... then I'm done.

Next year, Both AMD and Intel are supposed to have frontside busses at or near the 1Ghz range, instead of the wimpy 133 Mhz like this machine has. Now THAT will fly... I'm waiting for that to come out and then I'll build my server machine :)

open source?

I've got a 4 year old P-II myself. I have Win 95 OSR2 which matches Win 98. The USB functions here.

This old dinosaur on cable modem screams compared to my 800+ machine at work. The applications run a bit slower, but I'm not running CAD or desktop publishing most of the time either, so I really don't notice.

One of these days I'll get the gamer built for the kids and a new unit for my wife & me. The dinosaur can function as a file server.

I will keep the 19" monitor though. I paid a lot of money for this thing 4 years ago.

I ran Win95B myself, but it only supports built-on USB ports, not the pci add-in cards, and my MB had no USB ports. I tried, but it would NOT work. It detected the USB card, but would not run properly with the USB add-on card.

Anyway, my wireless networking equipment has management programs that will not run on win95, so I had to upgrade this box to do that, as well. I got the case, MB, RAM, HD AND win98 for that price.

BTW, the kids are having a blast now that their games play right, and the 3D stuff actually works. I had a 3D card before, but it and my BIOS were at odds, making only a few games work.

great deal!

Mark;

Sounds as though you got a great deal on the new box.

My old Dell has the USB on board. It won't support the XP stuff as it is only a 266, but I may update to Win 98 just for the interface.

With the kids getting older they complain more and more about Dad hogging the computer. I'm looking for a good deal for them. May have to build a custom for the gaming features.

Happy Thanksgiving

-John
