So, what exactly is needed to convert my open 3. 07 Dana 71 to a sure grip?? I gather a center locker section and ...

Also, where do I get these parts??

Bottom line - I need to get rid of this 1 wheel spinner in the winter thing. It is really buggin me!;)

Thanks!

Robert

On my 1992 I had an open diff and I had a local shop replace it with a Powr-lok clutch type limited slip. They knew I'd been considering a locker and so they set it up as stiff as possible. That was the best traction I've ever had in a truck.

From what I remember the Trac-lok is another one that's available, but it's definitely not as good as the Powr-lok.

I'm not sure where you could find a Powr-lok online, but maybe some of the 4-wheel or offroad sites? Better yet, check with Blumenthals or Standard Transmission and Gear--they both advertise in the TDR and have great reputations.

The big question is do they have it for the 3. 07 gear trucks... ...

I will have to give them a call!

Thanks for the idea!

The housing is different, but the posi is interchangeable with the lower geared 70's . Axle Bill of Material Enter your BOM and verify on this site. Edit: don't know why the copy and paste link went wrong but I looked it up as a 91-93 Dana 70 and it listed the same differential case and complete assembly for 3. 07 and 3. 54/4. 10.

Re 3.07 to limited slip

I did it on my 89 truck, I took a limited slip out of a 93 3. 54 dana 70 and replaced the limited slip pack wiith brand new packs and swaped the old open carrier and had the LS carrier put in. Truck runs great , backing up with the trailer is a breeze. ruck runs down the freeway great.

Is that 3. 07 a rare rear end? I had an old friend who had a 90 2 wheel drive Ram with cummins who was trying to find this rear end so he could get better than the 25mpg he claimed. His goal was to reach in excess of 28mpg.

There aren't any replacement R&Ps for them but the axles themselves are as rare as the trucks they were in. I've found that as many trucks are being parted out in favour of repower projects the 3. 07 axles are available. I know there is one for sale in so cal right now for 300 bucks.

I think it was Philip who posted the p/n and location of the only 3. 07 limited slips available on the planet a couple years ago... I think there was only 2 or 3 still on the shelf at a stealership somewheres...

And they were not giving them away either!

Thierry - Doid you then have a 3. 54 rear or did you still have the 3. 07??

Pepecat - Where can I find info on this axle?? Do you know if the r&p is worn??

Do I gather correctly that I can still use MY 3. 07 R&P and just add a clutch pack from a LS axle (either 3. 07 or 3. 55) and I am good to go??

Thanks!

Robert

Robert- You can use your old R&P, but you'll need a new center carrier. I have been told the wont interchange.

If you had a dually, I'd just swap you my 3. 54s. Wont make that much difference in MPGs, anyway. ;) :-laf

I got interupted by a phone call and didn't finish my thoughts on this. According to Dana/Spicer the only difference between the 89/early91 3. 07 and the later Power Lok assembly is the axle gears. 35 spline on the early ones and 32 on the later ones. The inner kit for the early (89-91) cases is the same as a late 70's Ford application. So with some mixing of parts it's a simple swap. If you want to retain ABS, a later case will have to be used, if not find a Power Lok from a 4. 10 or higher geared Ford with a posi.

I know this is an old thread. But I'll add a little info.

Last week I had a 3:07 open carrier, a 3:54 CTD L/S carrier and a Ford model 70 L/S carrier all setting on the bench side by side. The good news is the L/S from any model 70 axle that had 3:54 to 4:56 gears will fit into a 3:07 housing. The ring gear spacing is the same.

It has always been assumed that the 3:07's had a different carrier. They do not. Just check you axle spline count before you get a L/S. From what I have seen most of the 3:07'S had 35 spline axles.

BTW that ford L/S is getting rebuilt to 35 spline count. :D

Glad to see someone else saying the same thing. I posted this on a couple of forums and noone seemed to believe this. If you go to Dana's website and look these axles up by BOM, you can get a piece by piece breakdown of these rearends and compare carriers, internal gears, clutches, etc.

If you find a BOM that doesn't cross. I can tell you Dana was a little iffy on its build. I have two 3:07 axles in my truck the BOM's do not cross. Both had bearing race OD's installed that were under size from factory spec bearings.
