Open-element filters

Does anyone have any thoughts about using an AFe mega cannon (or any other type of open-element air filter) near or on the beach? I often drive my trucks on the beach fishing at Cape Hatteras, NC, and have concerns with the fine, blowing sand, and the proximity of these filters to the grille. Are these concerns legit? Kept K&N in the box on 97 CTD with no problems. What advantage do open elements have over a high-flow in stock airbox, HP wise? Just starting the BOMBing process. Many thanks, Jaybird.
