Opinion please Lift pump

2007 3500 5.9 Dodge, completely stock. Would not run past 3/8 tank, removed the tank and pump, found a couple of things. The filter basket on the pump side is full of junk, and after running the pump on the bench could not tell if anything is coming out of it, air, fuel, or anything. So I am guessing the pump is at fault, no visible splits in the hoses. Going to replace it anyway, my question, since I can get at everything should I go with a external aftermarket pump and filter system or replace the internal pump with something aftermarket? Either direction who makes a good pumping system?

Aftermarket frame mount systems have a much higher failure rate than a factory in tank unit. I don't think any aftermarket in tank systems are available. Chances are the clogged pickup caused the original pump to starve and overheat.

After removing the tank we found much grit in the bottom of the stock pump and tank, after only 55K miles. That explains the 3/8 fuel problem, and seemingly lack of power. Since the tank was out and cleaned, I elected to purchase a FASS Titanium system. Not a bad installation and the truck seems to run much better. As to longevity we will see, at least it easy to get to and has a life time guarantee. I did rig a by pass fuel supply hose, with valve, so to allow the injector pump to draw directly from the tank in the event of a LP failure emergency.

Good move with the bypass set-up.Imho the shortcoming is trying to get any repair parts while travelling with any aftermarket system.

Having experience with aftermarket lifetime guarantee external pumps, I would recommend staying with a factory in-tank pump.

Just a follow up. Replaced the stock lift pump with a Fass Titanium external lift pump and filters. I also reconfigured my Edge CS2 to read lift pump psig. So, I can report that I have 23.4 psig of fuel pressure at a idle, to the injector pump, and the truck runs oh so much better. For now I am a happy camper, until the next great adventurer.
