Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Turnout Stacks

I am looking for some opinions on how to solve my failed 5th gear in my NV4500.

I have 135,000 miles on my truck and it is an only used for hauling and towing which is usually once a month. I have a car trailer and 23’ boat and both weight about 9,000 lbs. My modifications are listed in the signature. I put the clutch in 2003 with about 20,000 on it and have had zero problems with it. I spoke with Dan at Quad 4x4 and he recommended the NV5600 due to the fact I am exceeding the torque rating (600 ft lbs) for the NV4500.

I figure I have three options.

A. I can buy the $300 kit from Standard Transmission and put it in with some help from some friends.

B. I can buy the $1100 Torque King rebuild kit form Quad 4x4 and have a trusted local shop do the install.

C. I have a NV5600 available from a local junk yard with less than 50K miles on it for $2000. I understand these are getting hard to find parts for and I would need a new clutch/driveline modifications.

Thoughts?

you forgot the 4th option... spend 50 bucks and a few hours at most and have it repaired well enough to handle what your doing for many many more miles. I also run a NV4500 in my 2000 and I have a few mods myself and its just cheaper to rebuild what you have unless you intend to do some serious sled pulling or drag racing in the future.

If you upgrade your transmission to the newest style mainshaft (fully splined with a locknut) or drill your mainshaft and put in a pin you will be fine with an ofe southbend. I am running more power than that thru mine with no problem. Just depends how much you want to spend. without the mainshaft the rebuild kit is 200. 00 from border parts in Spring Valley ca. Run very good oil and you will be fine unless you really abuse it.

Some people seem to have bad luck with the 5600 and parts seem to be more expensive.

I would put it back on, torque the nut and tack weld it. I did that and havent had a problem since. Only cost was time and trans fluid.

i've tacked them, welded them, lock tighted them, center punched them, put the aftermarket kits, the only one i've seen hold was the one that i double nutted. I like the idea of drilling the shaft. I need to try that. I even seen where it pushed the nut clean off without on threading. If the nut just backed off then try a fix that ivolves making the nut stay on, if the splines on top have went out then you have to get the upgraded shaft, also keeper on the bottom can come off and the splines in the bottom syncro can go bad.
