I headed out this morning and in about 2 miles the CEL came on and the truck started missing and wouldn't take any throttle. It also sounded like an old 12 valve motor with all the knocking and such. Coasted into a parking lot and read the code which was a P0192, (Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Low).

After trying to restart several times it did finally restart and I made it back home. I noticed my lift pump pressure being erratic and somewhat lower at about 6 psi which is about 2 pounds lower than usual. I immediately thought it was a faulty lift pump as mine's still the stock one mounted on the filter housing. I decided the lift pump was the problem and drove up to Geno's and picked up a FASS with the filters.

However, after researching many posts most people seem to be replacing the rail pressure sensor. Well with the erratic lift pump pressure what's your opinion?????? The rail pressure sensor is another $229 at Geno's. It seems terribly expensive for such a small piece. Do you think I need it???

Thanks for your thoughts,

Bill

-----(I'm sure I need the FASS with my mods so I'll install it anyway)

Update -- When I got the truck back home yesterday the engine had returned to its normal running and wasn't missing at all. I left it outside last night, temps only dropped to around 36F thinking it may have trouble on the startup this morning but it fired right up and seemed to run fine.

I had other assignments today as the wife was off but I did drive down the street and back getting it fully warmed up. Didn't notice anything but now my lift pump pressure is still about 2 lbs lower, (at about 5 psi), than it was before this incident happened.

It will be Thursday before I can get back to troubleshooting it any further. I'll pull the fuel filter out first for inspection and then I'll probably go ahead and install the FASS which I have put off too long.

Since it seems to be running OK for the moment is there anyway to test the rail pressure sensor?? If the condition returns I'll guess my next step is the Rail Pressure Sensor, correct?? If the FCA is the suspect I think I would like to step up and get one of the Wicked Diesel's Arson II or III CP3 kit to install:

WICKED DIESELS, WICKED DIESEL

Or is this a bad idea ???

I had 2 rail pressure sensors go out with in 8 months. This happened soon after I installed a Quadzilla r/p guage. Im not saying that was the problem, but after the 2nd sensor I decided to take out the Quadzilla. I also took out the Edge ez at the same time. No more problems so far.

What symtoms when your RP sensor went out

Ram Rod - Could you coment on your truck's symtoms when the rail pressure sensors went bad?

thanks in advance,

Bill

When my rail pressure sensor ('03) went out the truck sounded like a 1980's era diesel. A whole lot of clacking and not a lot of power. Then it died and wouldn't restart. At least it was in the driveway, next to my '06 and my deep well sockets.

The sensor at Dodge is around $600, from Cummins around $200. I keep a spare. I found a complete fuel rail including pressure releif valve and rail sensor on eBay for $75. I bought it, moved the parts over, they tested OK and I keep it under my back seat in case I need anything far from home.

Keeping a spare sounds like a good plan. I had called Geno's Garage and even though they show one in the catalog, they don't have any in stock so I'll have to look elsewhere.

Why is it that Dodge charges so much for their Cummins parts. I feel violated everytime I go near the dealership.

Thanks for everyones input,

Bill
