A little help with a decision on whether to repair or replace the stereo in my truck.

It was the top of the line from Dodge back in 99, with equalizer, 6 speakers and 6CD changer. The problem is that the right side speakers have stoped working. The local stereo shop says that it can be fixed, but what I am trying to decide is if it would be cheaper in the long run to replace the whole system,or fix this one.

Thanks for your thoughts,

Chris

If you replace the stereo, I imagine your CD changer will be useless without it.

You can get a good quality head unit that plays cassettes and controls a CD changer for less than $200 and a 10 disc changer also for around $200 (cheaper for the 6 disc of course). I have a Sony am/fm cassette that I got for $149 on sale. It controls a 10 disc changer that I paid about $210 for. So take those numbers and get an estimate for repair of your stereo. I think in the long run it will be cheaper to fix the radio.

I got a Pioneer Dodge size head unit and CD changer from Crutchfield, installation was simple, i kept my stock Infiniti speakers. I put a JL Audio sub under the seat with an amp and now i have all the noise i could want.

BTW, where do they put the stock changer? And where do people put aftermarket changers? My 10 disc is just wedged slightly in under the rear of the center seat/console until I figure out where to mount it.

On our 1996 3500, the dealer installed the Mopar 6-disc changer under the front passenger's seat. You had to slide the seat all the way forward to access it.

Roy,

Mine is under the back seat in the corner on the drivers side. It doesn't take up much room because its half under the seat back, and it is eazy to get to.

The dodge size stereo is called 1. 5 din. I just sold a pioneer one that size because I couldn't dim it down enough (I have real sensitive eye's) other than that it was a great radio. I also run a 12 disc changer mounted under rear seat on drivers side. I am now going to install XM satellite radio. Satellite radio is realy neat, check it out if youare going to replace your system.

Get new stuff

You might spend a hair more but the sound quality is better and the features are better on aftermarket radios. :) ;)
