I have a 90, with the (rebuilt) getrag, and 4:10's.

I have the front clip off for bodywork, and am in the process of installing a 2nd gen air-to-air.

This is my plan: PDR HX35/16, POD's, 4" down pipe, and exhaust (which i will build myself). And of course tune the pump to suit. It is currently untouched.

Is this the best all around combination for this truck?

I am going to go with the tallest tire possible to combat the low gear ratio.

I also won't be towing or hauling obscene weights consistantly, but there will be occasions.

Would a 14 cm2 exhaust housing be a better choice for "kick in the pants" driving?

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi KW,

You got a nice little project going bud... . :D

The earlier model CTD's used a larger injector body (9mm) and if run up too hot they can develope cracking in the heads. Usually they crack around the valve seat/guide area.

With that in mind you should try to make a bit of compromise on your 'kick in the pant's 'O meter'.

The 14cm will give you good response but they can get a bit choked at the upper end which in turn will begin to generate hot boost.

Since you're going to install an IC and use a modified turbo with a better 'map' you have some room to work with.

Your gears, tire size, model year, planned mods make me suggest you use the 16cm. It won't be as "jumpy" out of the hole but it will breath good on the road, especially on the highway.

You can use your pump tuning to compensate a bit for the minor loss at low RPM which come from the 16cm as opposed to the 14cm.

I know many guys (me included) have and do run a 14cm or even a 12cm 'gated but I think it's a tad too small for your needs.

Remember, the 14cm and the 12cm need to have a modified downpipe/turbo length due to the longer "tail" on the smaller housings. Normally the 16cm is a direct bolt up/no mod needed fit.

Just my thoughts and we got lots of good experience here... . the guys will all jump in on this and help you out...

Thanks for the reply, pastor Bob!

I've been lurking on the TDR for quite a while, and i am quite familiar with diesel engines in general.

I figured the general consensus would be to go with the 16, I just wanted to discuss any and all options.

I've just installed a 16 housing on my 89, which had a 18. 5 housing, and IMO its still boggy at low rpms. Still low end smoke til the turbo lights the fire. Since I don't tow anything, I'm thinking of a wastegated 14 in the future. This way, possibly more low end for city driving, and I won't spin the 16 into orbit since its not wastegated, I'm hitting 40psi empty, not quite full throttle. I think wastegated you can protect the turbo a bit more?? Don't know for sure as I haven't run one, cept for in a over the road truck with no boost gauge.

I do a lot of highway driving and I think the 16 housing is fine for me... I have the 3. 54 axle and it is a touch doggy till the tubo gets rolling but I think the gov spring might help that out a bit. Right now when I nail it at 60 I get instant 30 + psi of boost (gage is bottomed out) so I hate to think what would happen with a 14 housing... . it would have to be gated.

I think with the 4. 10 you will be fine with the 16 housing for all around driving.

I think that's where I would start especially with the old cyl head design.
