Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) JVD Engineering?

I have a 99 QC longbed, 5 spd 4x4, 4. 11's, installing KORE PACE system currently w/ 35 in parnelli jones. 4 in MBRP, bully dog big fuel kit, and drperformance comp, stock turbo with blocked elbow. Pyro and boost gauges. I want to do this right. I got an adjustable elbow already. drperformance is going in trash. I am going to install southbend 13. 25 and FASS.

From there I want to go with a TST adjustable comp, F1 mach 3 or 4 inj. (more hp is better  ), and a turbo i don't have money for twins so i was thinking a PDR B-1-2.

I tow 15000lbs. but low mountains on East coast. Max about 3000 ele. Thats only a couple of times a month though.

What are the opinions on the turbo/comp/inj setup I am thinking about? Be honest, this truck earns its keep and needs to run everyday.

Thanks

Tst Powermax 3 with adjustable remote (for play), a set of 130 hp injectors, and an HTB2 (62mm wheel/12cm wastegated housing) OR something similar to any of the above. Keep the TST set low or off, tow all day long, turn it up and make a lot of power.

I run the Drag Comp, EDM3s and a B1-2 turbo. 37" BFG mudders with 3. 54 gears got me 434hp and 1006ft lbs of torque (same numbers with MAD ECM with slightly better power curve). Same set up on a 4. 11 truck with 35" tires got real close to 500hp.

It runs GREAT and tows my 12k max GVWR toybox trailer like a champ. Your gears and 35" tires will help even more. I tow with the Comp off ALMOST all of the time (dyno'd 340hp with box off) and I've been from sea level to 8000'. EGT gets a bit hot on long hills at higher elevations, but it is a very driveable 500hp truck in lots of scenarios. I would suggest the latest Mach4 injectors, most say more power, less smoke and lower EGT with the newest 4s over last years 3s...

Good luck and keep us posted on the additions!

That's a close one to call. If you watch your pyro and downshift as necessary, you will be fine, your egt's should be alright with the box off. That HTB2 62/12 spools lightning quick, keeping the egt's down while rowing through the gears. The new mach 4's are abit cleaner from what I have heard so that combo should work nicely, leaving you the TST box for Dyno/sled pulling/drag racing only.

One more thing, think about putting a dual disc clutch in your truck vise the single Con OFE/FE whatever. Dual disc's are the only way to go in my book, less grabby, and will hold alot more power.

A SBC DD clutch will cost him over $1700 more than a Con FE... ... . Also the HTB2 does not flow as well as B-1-2, the exhaust side is very restrictive @ 12cm.

Mark,

Because of the 15k loads you tow you need a turbo that flows in as well as out. I would go with something like a full B-1 or maybe even a PhatShaft 66. The 4's will get pretty hot towing that much weight... . Something along the lines of a Mach 2. 5 along with the above mentioned turbos would work well for you.

Doug

Yeah, i noticed the prices are kind of steep on the DD. 750 just to change my input shaft the 1800 for the clutch.

What about the HTB2 with the 14 housing instead of the 12?

A full B-1 will be harder to stay up on going down the highway and will probably run hotter than the HTB2 for cruising temps, I am sure the B-1 will outflow the HTB2 on the top end. If you like grabby clutches, put an FE or an OFE in there, I had one, hated it, took it out.

The FE is kinda grabby but will hold... . The OFE is very smooth in my opinion... . The B-1 will be fine going down the highway, currently I am running a steroid B-1 with no problems. The B-1-2 is a very nice compromise but I like it better on the auto.

Doug

I know a lot of guys that have OFE's and love them. Mine held the power fine, but I could'nt stand how grabby it was. Different strokes for different folks. I will never go back to a single, but I sled pull all the time too.

rivercat,

You got the idea... . The B-1-2 is a B-1 with a smaller exhaust housing for faster spoolup. You can look Here for a brief description of each of the Bomber line of turbos.

Doug

If I was in your position pullin 15000 pounds, with a 5 speed i would call PowerbyPoole.com had have him just add on to the HX35 that is already on there and put an HT3B on it the turbo runs around 400-450 and all the pips and filter really sre not that much. It would be about as much as a B-1 would end up costin you. And then you could run some of Don's Mach 5 injectors like a 5. 7or somethin like that with reasonable EGTs and you could drop an injector sise if it gets too hot.

Doug,

What if you were to go with a KSB-1,Drag comp,Mach4's and the CON-FE? How would that work for occasional towing a few times a month. I have been reading all these treads and next spring or summer going to do this to my 01 HO. I like all the information so far I guess it is our own preference. That you for your input on this turbo I asked about.

Randy

RKraft,

I am not a big fan of the KSB-1, I feel that the exhaust housing is too restrictive. I really do like the B-1-2 for those wanting more bottom end.
