This detailed story is why people like me worry about our pocketbook when IGNORANT BEAN COUNTERS force a cheaper part on us like a CP4. Further the reputation of diesel engines from auto makers is horrible with a bar set really low. Bean Counters happy to cut corners for now and the hell with warranty or reliability down the road.

Our, USA's, refusal to learn from other OEM mistakes or to own up and spend the money to fix a design defect or mistake is why overseas vehicles have kicked our complicit asses. Do you think this fellow is going to buy even FORD toilet paper in the future, ever?

After the 6.0 came out, I was Ford trained on the engine by a regional Ford Fleet engineer/ rep. I’d been trained by this man on a few Ford topics, and the 6.0 was one class. He was a fantastic instructor and a heckuva good guy- we spent a lunch hour together with him explaining exactly how the EEC IV Thick Film Ignition works- in detail. I would pay out of pocket to learn more from him if I could. The only hint I’ll give is that he has a Polish name, like the rep in the story.
Anyway, about the 6.0, he would repeatedly apologize for how this engine turned out as he went through the course. I’m not kidding- when it came down to discussing the head bolt/ fuel rail/ injector replacement, he really distances himself to the point of disowning both Ford and Navistar. I was astonished. As time went on, I came to understand his frustration. This is from an actual high ranking Ford employee. Imagine that!
 

Ozzy thats a really good in-depth analysis. Wouldn't it be great if we could all get together and hire Luna to take a look at all documentation from FCA like she did for Ford (11" thick pile of documents)? She is an actual smart person. What is the R/1000 on CTD engines with the Old CP-4 and New CP-4? How much per month is FCA paying out for warranty repairs on CTD engines? What kind of internal emails are going around FCA executive levels? Yes, I am living in a dream world, they will never be transparent without lawsuits. And maybe it is indeed actually a vanishingly small number of CTDs that fail and there are just a few unlucky owners, hard to know since we can't get data.

Hmmmmmmmmm..........I wonder what kind of "Aftermarket equipment" Mr Margeson had installed.

Years after my above mentioned training, I went to another “diesel seminar” put on by a high volume Ford commercial store, and there was another rep speaking who told a tale of a 6.0 that was melting- yes MELTING EGR valves and other intake components. After their forensics that included pyros everywhere, they detected full EGTs after the EGR cooler, and after removal, they found an aftermarket cooler installed. The rep went on to explain how efficient the OEM cooler is in how it reduces the EGT so much in a foot and a half give or take, and the replacement just couldn’t do it. I think that guys warranty was voided and he was back charged for the detective work because he denied doing work to the engine.
 
I read this article yesterday and giggled. Ford could really use some course correction. If I had the money I’d have initiated a lawsuit for my 2011 6.7 Powerstroke.....and I hate lawyers!

As to that punitive damages award, however, the court concluded it was excessive and conditionally granted a new trial unless Margeson agreed to an amount limited to 10 times his compensatory damages. Margeson did agree, and the punitive damages award was accordingly reduced to $725,640.40.

Margeson brought a motion for a statutory award of attorney fees under the CLRA and the Song-Beverly Act, which the trial court granted without any reduction to the number of hours billed by Margeson's attorneys. The ultimate amount of fees awarded by the trial court—including a 1.8 multiplier the trial court chose to apply to the lodestar amount—was $953,793.90.
