which TIG welder?

Planning for "Shop" build - Give me your suggestions!

I have some automobile sized jack stands, and a few larger. I find myself wishing for stands better suited for working on my 2001 2500 and similar sized trucks having a lot of ground clearance, and that is with fairly standard tire sizes. If you had bigger tires, it would be even worse. I also work on the earlier Dodges, meaning late 40's through the 60's.

I consider buying stands more dimensionally suited, or fabricating a set or two, just to know I have the best possible arrangement. I wonder, also, if a design more specifically suited to our trucks, or four wheel drive trucks [meaning not a beam from axle, rather an axle with a differential housing], would be the optimum situation.

What is your thought with regard to a height range? For best versatility, what would you do for the load saddles? I say that because the front axle does not present a lot of support points.

Do you, would you, support under the frame at either end of the truck?

Hein Werner makes some larger stands and theirs are indicated to be made in the USA.

I am wondering if I put this in the wrong forum. It seems there should be 100 opinions. I considered putting it in the power train, 2nd gen, forum, but elected not to, thinking it might upset a moderator.

i really recommend you search the Shop and Tools section of Pirate4x4.com. Use the term 'jack stands' and you will get tons of cool threads with ideas, materials lists and types, etc.

I've found on my truck I don't need jack stands as there is enough room for me without them. I designed the garage I am building with a 13' ceiling so a lift will fit. Hence no opinion on jack stands;)

Norhtern Tools has some really beefy ones. I have some 3-ton for the trucks and 12 ton for my 17K lb 5th wheel.

Hope this helps,

I have a set like these from snap-on, but I cant find them at snap-on any more.

Check out model#81209, specs here--They hold 10 tons and raise from 18" to 30".

I like them cause they are welded steel and use a pin to secure the load, not the forged ratchet type, which if poorly cast (ie... Hecho in China), can break under load. Those are NOT the type for me, even though Iknow most guys use em all the time.

Of course, you gotta pay for em, but I got mine at closeout from a mobile guy for $150.
