Why not use a variable output
wastegated turbo instead of twin turbos?
it will work the same as having a large
turbo and a small one. I think that
cummins should incorporate their
features in the larger engines to the
smaller ones. like the turbo and
dual-pulse fuel injection.
 
IMO, the answer is quite simple:

1. $$$
2. Mass production Reliability.

Oh... and did I mention $$$!!

Chrysler tried that back in the mid 80's on their some of their 2. 2L engines. . I think they had red valve covers... ANYWAY! To make a long story short, it was not a wise choice for a mass produced vehicle. Warranty claims were rather high.

I've posted this short MSG a little earlier
in the General Diesel Topic :

I've already had an HX-40 VGT in my hands.
After several days, spent in considerations I've send it back.
The "problem" would be to build the electronics to make that turbo work properly.
To give it's best you need to monitor the MAP the CPS and RPM. It can be done! Would it be worth the effort? I didn't think so.

Another problem is that the VGT actuator is moved by compressed air. No problem for a big rig with air brakes, with the Ram it's another story...

OH, I've forgotten the price! Even though a buddy has got it very " cheap" it's always priced at $2450.

Chrysler turbo cars are fine, if you change the oil and do not let the stupid factory mechanics work on them.

You said they key word brother... "IF"!

I hope you did not misunderstand me to say that DC turbos are junk. That wouldn't be fair to the Datona Shelby I owned... and ran for 160K before selling it. .

I was implying that many folks simply don't know how to properly care for the special needs of a turbocharged engine.

As you know, Turbos are far more sensitive to hot shut-downs, poor quality oils, and infrequent oil changes than naturally aspirated motors.

Now think about the average Joe and his driving habits?? Think he's worried about what's running in his engine. . Assuming he even knows. .

Marco's last post finished my thoughts quite well. $$$-vs-gain.
 
The 2. 2 turbo cars were great. They had an Air Flow Research turbo on them i believe. The 2. 5s had the Mitsubishi POS turbos on them. My dad has an 89 Shelby that had a turbo go at 33K and one at 72K. A guy did a half*ss rebuild on the last one that failed and it outlasted both of the NEW turbos. My conquest also had a turbo self destruct(Nut came off of impeller... big mess thankfully the seals were bad also and the oily intercooler caught all the shavings) Anyways. . the VNT?(Variable Nozzle Turbo) Cars are RARE!! I have only seen two of them around here. So the people that bought them bought them to drive the sh*t out of. Sorry for the long post... just my . 02

I believe that Marco has a variable turbo on order for his and it was half of the price of the twin turbo kit. Hey Marco, if you're reading this then reply and let us know how it's going.

I had 130,000 miles on my 89 and spun bearings because I was stupid, i. e. driving too fast and 2 quarts low. The mechanics need training and brains, too many mechanics today rely on a computer to tell them what is wrong.

I have see $2,000 turbo repair bills go to Chrysler because the mechanic is an idiot. The most common problem in turbo cars is the leaking hoses. The extra underhood heat of a turbo car makes the hoses age even faster. Vacuum lines are also under positive pressure when the engine is boosted.

I have had to replace the lines several times on my 89 and I imagine on my RT's I will need to replace all the vacuum lines when I do the teardown.
