Anyone try towing with a Van Aaken 3.2?

I decieded to go for it this afternoon, so I called and talked to harry at pdr. I'm guess I'm going with the "towing twins", because I do tow alot and my truck is more of a work truck than a racer. I'll probaly never put it on a dyno, hook to a sled, or go to the strip, but I do want to surprise a buddy of mine and his 6. 0, and last I would like to be able to use more of the settings on the TST.

I gotten to where I drive kinda like a grandpa because that the way my truck gets the best mileage. Plus, I'm kinda lazy about shifting out of 6th.

I drive this truck around a farm most of the time, usally with at least a 1000#s misc. in the back. When I tow its usally a big tractor or backhoe or something like that.

What are yall's thoughts and opinons on piers setup? Will this be good setup for what I do with the truck or should I've gone with something else. My concerns are drivabilty, reliability, egt while towing, and spanking that 6. 0

I have no regrets about going with twins. The only problem is is I can't shift fast enough! I went with BD because my dealer sells there stuff and installed it for me.

I have heard nothing but good about PDR.

I use my towing and the coolest thing is pulling a long hill, grossing around 23,500 # and running around 1,000 to 1,500 degrees pre turbo.

If I had an auto, that would hold, it would be a real hot rod.

You did great. Piers is one of the best out there. You will be very pleased with your twins. As far as beating your buddy with a 6. 0, while I am sure you will have way more power, rowing the 5600 from a stop in a speedy fashion is almost an oxymoron . You can try but I would race him from a rolling start where you have less gear changes.

Also if you race from a rolling start, a little trick I like is brake boosting. That is, when you are traveling at a steady speed, (40, 50, 60 mph whatever speed you want... ) apply the brakes while still applying the throttle. The turbos will begin to spool and when you let off the brakes you will have more boost to take off with at the start of your race. Also makes your truck sound like a 747 :)

after you smoke the stock clutch... ... . put a sbc con fe in it and when your buddy with the 6. 0h no wants to race just put it in 3'rd put your right foot to the floor and dump the clutch. when the tires stop smoking, he will see just taillights.

Most people regard Piers' twins as setting the standard in twins kits.

Personally, I think the towing twins are the best the offer for 99% of us.

Does anyone use a twins set up with the stock turbo as one of the turbos? If so, what are the positives and negatives of this set up?

Also, is anyone running a VGT Turbo ? (Variable Geometry Turbocharger)

Re: VGT, I believe the ford 6. 0's are already using this technology & I saw this at the Cummins site: http://www.everytime.cummins.com/every/misc/vgt.jsp

The artic air twins from Relenless Diesel use the stock turbo up top. The downside of it might be alittle higher drive pressures, ive not really seen the effect of this but people say they do. The up side of it is less lag and you can save almost $2000. 00. This will probably stir some people up,which is not my intent, but the fastest common rails run the artic air turbos. I ran 12. 45et at the dhra event in houston and another truck from the same shop went 12. 23et at indy this year.

Using the stock turbo is not an option in my case. Its sounding kinda like a feral tom cat starting a fight. Got on to hard with the Tst to high then let off to quik. Oh well. I'm playing it safe and driving the jeep till the twins get here.
