Hi all,
Ordering new truck and need some gear ratio information.
RPM'S at this speed 65MPH and auto trans with 4:10 rear.
1. 3rd lockup

2. OD lockup

Wife says if ordering new truck it has to be automatic. She helps pay for the truck and when we go camping she backs the boat and trailer in the water for me and when we load the boat she backs the trailer in so all I have to do is drive the boat on the trailer. I need the 4:10's for towing 19,500lb's GCW.
I triple trail everything in my signature and with the current rig I have trouble pulling the weight plus my fuel mileage is at 7 MPG towing. Hopeing to increase feul mileage towing with 4:10 gears as the engine will be in the HP numbers better. Thanks for any and all information. Ron

While I do not have an Automatic, my rpm is 60/2000 65/2125 70/2250. Your rpm will be slightly less as the final for the auto is . 69 vs . 75 for the bolt action. I have never had a truck that will pull like the one I have now... ... ...

Ron,
I read before that there is a 300 rpm jump. Like I think 70 is 1800 rpm with your and mine. 4. 10s at 70 is 2100. Or so I think. ??

I've got the same truck, only 2wd, stone stock w/ 8500 miles. 65mph=approx. 2100rpm.
Lock-up mph depends on how far your foot is to the floor.

I had a Y2K with auto and 3. 54 rear. I towed a 12K 5er and 2. 5K boat/trailer. Figuring the truck weighed in at around 7000 loaded, that's 21. 5K! I got 9-10 mpg at around 60 mph. RPMs were 1500 @ 55 mph. 17-1800 at 60, and 2000-2100 @ 65. RPMs were around 2000 in 3rd between 55 and 60 mph. IMHO I wouldn't tow the double trailers more than 60-65, even tho the truck will definetely do it.

Go to the Gear Vendors site. They have the Gear Ratios for the autos and manuals. Then you can calculate MPH based on RPM and decide where to be. I can send you my spreadsheet if you want. I use it to correct for my larger tires.

Do a search on 4:10's,which rear end, 4:10 vs 3:54 etc etc in all forums
you will find more than you ever wanted to know.

Thanks guys for your time. I have done the search thing but wanted to be sure before I ordered. The reason I'am tradeing is the truck i have now (99 dodge cummins) will not pull the load efficently, 7 MPG terrible, the truck I had before this one (dodge 95, 360 gasser) would pull the load and got 9 MPG over the same terrain.

P. S. I might not be tradeing after all. The Pi$$ ant dealer in Grand Forks (CHRYSLER CENTER) voided my warrenty for suspecting different fuel injectors. I am working with DC to have my warrenty reinstated.

I was dealing with another dealer until they found the warrenty issue, and I had made a pretty sweet deal. Will just have to wait and see what happens, hope not too long because when the factory incentives are gone so is the sweet deal. Ron

I have a 98. 5 3500 with an auto and 4. 10 gears. RPMs are about 2200 @ 70mph and 2100 or so @ 65mph. I get 10-13mpg pulling a 11000# gooseneck @ 70mph and about 17mpg unloaded. Hope this helps!

Thanks guys for your posts,
This will probably be put on hold for awhile now that I'am trying to resolve my warrenty issue. I'am so pi$$ed at DC I'am considering Ford, don't flame me cause I'am a wreck and have not got any decent sleep thinking about this. Ron
