Ordering Parts is Hard To Do!

Why can't the guys at Cummins get it right? You order the "LIFTER" cover gasket and get "VALVE" cover gaskets aka rocker covers??? And to beat that,they send me three??????????? valve cover gaskets. They have like no clue #@$%!



What (Cummins) engine has three cylinders??? I didn't even order them and I get THREE????



Cummins can't *find* the intake plate gasket. Is it a code name like "cylinder head air inlet cover thinggy seal"????



They also have no idea what the Turbo oil return drain tube *gasket* is. Does this too have a code name?



How do you get part #'s for our engines? It's so easy for John Deere.



BTW, the part# on the fuel lines are no good. They have changed.



Need Parts in Ohio.

I can sympathize with getting the wrong parts, hapens from time to time. More often than it should but I try to look at their books myself whenever possible. To be honest, I don't even know where a "lifter cover gasket" is? The 24 valves have a "rocker box" under the valve cover, it has a gasket, but the lifters are way in there.

I gave the serial # but does no good cause the parts guy don't know what your talking about.

The Lifters are riding on the cam and positioned in the right side of the block, hense it would be called the lifter cover *gasket* Maybe the "cam follower cover" gasket?





There is no air intake "manifold" per se. Right? So I don't know what to call it other than the air intake cover gasket.



Oh the pain and fustration.

Still confused..... beneath the intake manifold? You can see the rockers? The part of these beast's I've yet to play with. Is there some sort of access plate down there?

It should be listed under cam follower side cover gasket or tappet cover gaskt. SRadke, t is located on the drivers side of the engine. At the top portion of the block. It is basically an access cover for the cam, and cam followers.





Dont feel bad Greenleaf, Detroit, MB, CAT, all of them seem to have this problem. One mfg calls it one thing while the other calls it something totally different.

I don't know how you do it by phone. When I go to the Cummins shop in Roanoke, I always give the engine serial #. But it ends up with them getting the "old" parts book off the shelf and me pointing at the pictures, using words like "that dohicky there" or "no, no it's the jimmydoodle next to that flappy deal. " However, I usually get what I need. It's just a pain sometimes.

This is very frustating subject for me. Unfortunately parts people are not trained like most mechanics. I have found that NAPA has better parts people. They will in most cases allow you to see the illustrations in the parts manual. Back to Cummins or any other dealer, take the part description or illustration number from a repair manual. (The really thick headed parts people have to shown a pitcure or even a part before the light will come on in their tiny minds. ) I have had to show some parts people how to use their own books!!! If you think that your situation is bad, try running a business, like a repair shop with these bozzo's selling you the wrong parts. Hope this helps.

I've worked in several shops and it seems for the majority I end up needing to hold the parts guys hand to get the part I need. There are of course exceptions to the rule, and those people I remember their name.



I really love getting the list of questions about parts at part stores. I need a lip seal for the transfer case in my pickup. After telling them what make, year, model, engine, a/c or no, power steering or no, they ask the most stupid question. IS IT 4 WHEEL DRIVE? :-laf .



"Nope, I'm just hauling the transfer case in the bed, and its leaking gear oil all over the place!!! :-{} Here's your sign!!!"



I really love when I go ask for something and I can watch their eyes glaze over. Then I know how much help they are. Why does a kid that has never changed his own oil working in a parts department selling parts??

Thanks Patchk! I'll look at that. was looking at Cummins Quickserve. I didn't get far there.



I made the mistake of stopping in at a nationwide known auto pasts chain. Got me some engine paint. No problem there. I asked about diff. gear oil addative for limited slip. That's when I got the look.



Oh, by the way... ..... the fellows who are employed at these parts stores (not NAPA) "ALL" race cars here at our local quarter mile. I'm gussing that makes them qualified to sell parts to the public. BTW, my helpful sales dude has know idea what limited slip oil addative is... ... ... ... .....

That site Paychk showed there is a must for anyone with a 5. 9 Cummins. It will bring up diagrams, part numbers, its great. . GL it took me awhile to get into it, but once you do you can find what you need. I have part numbers on some old receipts for intake man gasket, and turbo drain gasket if you need them. Stick with the Cummins gaskets, the el cheapo one I got with my turbo didn't last long.
