I received my DMV registration renewal last week with a requirement for a Smog Test on my 08 Ram.

Anybody know what they test? I thought Oregon was not yet breath testing diesel trucks..... ?

This is from the SEMA Action site on emission testing.

OREGON

Oregon’s Department of Environmental Quality requires emissions testing in the Portland and Medford metropolitan areas prior to registration and as a part of the registration renewal process.

Diesel Vehicles:

Diesel vehicles in the metropolitan areas of Portland and Medford with a GVWR of 8,500 lbs or less are required to undergo emissions testing, but are provided with the same exemptions provided to gasoline powered vehicles in those area.

Exemptions:

1. Pre-1975 MY vehicles (Portland)

2. Vehicles that are 21 MY old or older (Medford)

Here is the link: SEMA SAN - SEMA ACTION NETWORK

They do not state how they test or what they look for. So it maybe similar to the "LAND of the FRUIT and NUTS" (Calf).

Our diesel vehicles, since they are over 8500 GVW are exempt. I don't know why they send out the info that states you have to go thru DEQ. Go online and print out an "Declaration of Exemption Form" and then mail in your check. You cant renew online when you file Exempt.

You do not have to get a DEQ test, just send in your renewal, along with your check and the exemption form.

Finding the form is very obscure... http://www.deq.state.or.us/aq/vip/forms/DeclarationExemption.pdf

Hope this helps,

Sounds as if you're off the hook for the emissions inspection on your pickup.

The time I was in Ohio (a state that has designated counties required to test for emissions but no required anuual or other safety inspection), I had to show up. For cars they typically just plugged into the OBD and started her up. For my Ram, they chocked her and penetrated the poor girl's tailpipe with a probe and gave her a run. The test in Ohio, anyway, was for particulates, as far as I know. Best I recall there wan't any test of gaseous emissions.
