Recession/Depression

Ever use Rosetta Stone?

So now Nabisco Moving Oreo Cookies to Mexico. They should put such a high tariff on these companies that exporting to the U.S. would not be economically feasible. Ford is building a large facility there. So who is moving out next and what are Americans suppose to do for a decent job to make a living.

Dave

Frito Lay moved some production also.
Hostess ditto.
Bimbo bread bought out Orowheat years ago. They replaced all the experienced breadguys with younger, predominantly Mexican ones and work them to death.

All this time and I just noticed this
"If you can read this, thank a teacher. Because you read this in English, thank a vet."

So very true

Its partly a combination of Unions, regulations, politics, EPA & OSHA that are destroying the working environment in the US. Its a problem that is reversable, but we the people as a whole allow it to continue and blame the Mexican, Chinese, Taiwan, Indonesia, and any other country that will give manufactures incentive to move manufacturing facilities to them. Why do we allow it? Because we keep giving our politicians more power to govern us with impunity, that lie to our faces for their own interests. And I'm referring to both political parties, what a toilett bowl Washington DC has become.

You can't blame everything on the government or the political parties. There are masses of people in this country that have their hands out and will vote for anyone that will fill it. In 08, obama said they were close to fundamentally changing the government. He did not lie, he did not say it quietly or behind your back. He said it out right and most people in the country just didn't listen or care, they wanted their hands filled. Why worry, it's the money from the government and they have plenty, right ?

Now that we are 18 trillion in the hole, and they say it should be 22+ when obama leaves, it's the kids, grandkids and great grandkids that will pau for it, not us, right ?
So let's vote in the Democrat woman who wants to be King and go for more in our pockets like the last 6.5 years.
Just learn how to read and write Chinese, we'll need it soon.

Ross Perot said it best about NAFTA in 2000. How is that loud Giant Sucking sound that hit in 2008 doing for you? After NAFTA both parties continued to sell us out. Most of the trucks on this forum are Made in Mexico. And the company was German owned and now Italian owned. Congress did not stop Obama from giving the company away to Fiat. If you watched the asshats in congress interview the big three CEO's in 2008 - it was disgusting! (Some were voted out, but not all.) The CEO of GM did screw an answer up - "Is GM paying any taxes?" and the answer given was a "No". GM was paying taxes at the time. No not corporate taxes as the CEO assumed, but property tax, payroll tax, medicare tax, Social Security tax... On each and every employee's paycheck given out. The real failure was on Wall Street - no car loans mean no cars sold. No cars sold mean people are out a job as suppliers go Bankrupt. No Job means you don't buy a car.

I'll tell you the worst part about NAFTA. As we are sitting in the custom office waiting to ship an RV into Canada we are watching trucks zoom into The USA without even slowing down. We could not get signed up to do the same 'Zoom into Canada eh' as The US government was openly hostile to us even trying to sign up. So free trade doesn't apply so much to shipping out of the USA.

Nothing wrong with Unions. Unless you like the Chinese Coal Mine way of doing things with only the people on top getting all the money while the workers die in unsafe and deadly mines. Sadly America is barely a step above 3rd world countries on mine safety referring to the safety violations that caused the Upper Big Branch Mine disaster. I suggest a little history on what they have done for the American Workforce before spouting off propaganda against them. After all the #1 server of the Kool Aid is the paper that hates or eliminated their own unions. Without Unions you have to wait for the government to raise minimum wage. You can't hardly raise a family on Minimum Wage. Biggest propaganda hang up is the Unions asking the company to share the rewards with the people in the trenches actually doing the work to make the company money.

Your kids and workers today don't have it as good as the retired folks today did and do now. No pensions from a company after you show up every day for 20-30 years to put lug nuts on. A good number of the pensions died in 2008. Maybe the birdseed the Government gives you from the Social Security Tax will keep you with enough Dog Food to survive on. Our standard of living is going to fall till the 3rd world slave labor standard catches up with us. The only reason the middle class is still around is because the cost of shipping from slave labor countries is high. This is the problem. We trade with a Communist Country and buy the cheapest we can get without regard for our kids or our neighbor staying employed. And then at work we try and provide the poorest customer service and cheapest unreliable products we can so that some foreign call center or product does just as well or better.

I'll never forget dating a teacher out west from Ohio. She moved out west because she couldn't get a job out east. As she drove off in her Honda car I couldn't help but think she was part of her own problem. On the other hand American Car Quality had to catch up.

Regardless we are not taking care of this country. Not the pothole filled roads. Not the Antique power grid. And we have sold out everything we can.

The unions support the Dem party. The Dem party supports the big govt players that make it almost impossible to open or continue to run manufacturing facilities in the U.S. It's no longer wages that force manufacturing overseas. It's regulation. Not laws from Congress, regulation from faceless pol hacks.

WOW! Politics is back on the TDR, but it's hiding in "Other" :)
Yes I remember hearing about "the giant sucking sound", and he was spot on! I'm sad to say that I agree with or believe every thing here so far, with the biggest factors being "outlawing" any kind of manufacturing process, and bottom line profit margins.
Anyone I engage on this (including gearheads who should remember) do not remember what happened in the mid 80's. Does anyone remember here on the TDR? Harley Davidson was trying to reform itself after almost failing under AMF, so President Regan came to the rescue and imposed a tariff on Japanese bikes over 700cc. I firmly believe this one action, and good marketing is what made the Harley phenomenon what it has been since then.
I am very sad to admit that something like this will not happen in any industry under this administration. It appears that the opposite is happening. It sounds like the current republican front runner may turn this ship around, but the other day, he made a comment about UAW rank making too much money. I just dunno.

As I recall this administration hit the Chinese tires with a tariff and tire companies pulled the molds out of China resulting in a tire price spike and shortage.

Wasn't aware of that but I believe it. I bet it wasn't done to help any American interest other than the big O's. I'm sure the companies weren't ready for that and caused a scramble. That explains what happened to tire prices!
