FOr those of you with the manual transmission!! Make sure your rig is out of gear before hopping out while it is running. THis morning I went out to start the truck and let warm up and I shifted out of first and I guess into second but I wasn't paying attention dumb me thought it was in nuetral and hopped out. When I did the truck took off and I immediately by hand pushed the clutch while walking next to the truck and it was headed for my barn. WEll I had to jump in and I panicked. I was trying to pull out of gear b/c I thought it was in first but I should of pushed out of second. The emergency brake was on the floor along with me holding the regualr brake adn the turbo was kicking. By the time I got her stopped, it had went right through the 16 foot garage door, into one ATV that went into the other ATV and cleared a big path stopping about 10 inches short of dad's motorcycle. I knew if I didn't get ti stopped, nothing would it would have went right through the back of the barn. Amazingly enough the truck wasn't damaged that much and neither was I. It needs a new bumper, grille, SS hood shield, and a little buffing on the roof and hood. I was darn lucky. So just remember to make sure your truck is not in gear when hopping out or don't start it while sleepy or under the influence. What a way to start the day. :eek:

Bummer

Bigstick- My heart goes out to you. Late last year I backed into a woman who had pulled out of a parking space behind me and I pretty much only beat up the bumper, I still had a sick feeling in my stomach every time I looked at it or thought about it.

My condolences, but remember it's only a 'thing' and it can be fixed!! :p :)

You are not alone! My last truck drove itself through my new fence and gate. Luckily I was in the cab at the time, truck only went a few feet before I stopped it (just short of my hot tub).

This was my first standard after driving autos for years, but no excuse!:(

Anyway, the reason I wanted to reply to your post was to ask if you considered an aftermarket bumper. I almost wish I would damage my bumper so that I could have an excuse (for the wife) to get a real bumper. I think the stock ones are way to flimsy. DC probably figured that the engine weighs so much that they would cut as much weight as possible from the bumper. There are lots of nice steel and aluminum ones out there. Just a thought.

Man, you are one lucky fella.

just think of what could have happend, makes you sick I'll bet.

Glad your OK.

I guess that is why the auto alarm dealer wouldnt touch an automatic starter for me. I could just imagine the path of destruction, through the garage, out the back of the garage and off into the sunset across the 280acre field... .

Glad you are OK!

I am glad you are OK. I have released the clutch on mine when I thought it was in Neutral, but it was in 2nd with a loaded trailer. they don't die like a gasser, just take off. :--) Love that Cummins!

I make a point in the mornings when I crank mine to wiggle the shifter side to side prior to releasing the clutch for that exact reason. This has saved me a couple of times. The left foot has had extensive training: DO NOT RELEASE THE CLUTCH UNTIL THE RIGHT HAND HAS SUCCESSFULLY WIGGLED THE ****ER TO THE RIGHT AND LEFT!:-{}

Sounds like the same CTD feature that I like so much did you in. I really like the fact I can pull a heavy boat up a steep ramp and not have to touch the clutch or accelerator. Sorry about your damage but your posting will remind others to keep an eye on things. My friend who spent some time in Africa calls my truck the white rino.

Big Stick

Glad you are ok. Don't spend your money replacing the flimsy a** Dodge bumper. Get a steel front end replacement. With the grille guard, you don't need to worry about hitting deer anymore (Just be sure you center-up on them).

A lady in a Honda rear ended my Wife's stopped rig at 30 MPH. Totaled the Honda and knocked a total of three square inches of paint off of the replacement rear bumper. :D

There are plenty of brands to get, and they look great too. You can paint it the same color as your rig. Also, you can get a grille for about $30, and paint it the same color as your rig. Homemade sport!! Check out the link below for the details on the grille.
