We were about 100 miles south of Salt Lake City Utah when the engine started smoking blue/white smoke, then knocking and finally dying.

We made it to Nephi, Utah where we meet the good folks at Painter's Dodge where Randy set us up with a loaner car, helped with hotel and restaurants.

They troubled shot the engine, and found 1 injector bad. They ordered it and installed it the next day.

While it did stop the knocking, it did not fix the smoke or the missing. Cylinder #1 is dead.

They will be contacting Dodge/Cummings to see what the next move is, but they feel that the piston or rings or some other damage has been done to that cylinder.

Mean while we rented a car and went home to Portland, Oregon leaving our truck with Painter’s Dodge in Nephi, Utah.

This is a 2001, 3500 HO with 62000 miles on it. Should be under warranty.

It is 100% stock and had its oil changed regularly.

Since I use this truck professionally (towing RV’s), I am out of work until Dodge fixes it.

Truckless is Seattle

Sure sorry to hear of your troubles Bob. Hope you get it going soon, sounds like it is getting a shortblock at least.

Could be as simple as a bad valve seat or a head gasket. Bad piston rings typically don't cause an injector to go bad. Could even be a cracked head, allowing oil into the cylinder. Keep us posted.

Don't tell the Dealer or Cummins that you use the truck "Professionally" I think if you read you warranty if your truck is used commercially the warranty is not worth the paper it is written on. So read the warranty and don't tell hem anything about how you use the truck to make a living.

In my opinion to replace the short block and rebuild would go into

prohibitive labor costs (remember these guys dont build one everyday).

I would ask that your engine be replaced with another brand new HO model, remember they have already failed once to diagnose the problem correctly, so whos knows whats wrong

unless its pulled and professionally observed.

I hope everything comes out well!

Its already too late. Posting anything like this on the TDR WILL be noticed.

Bad engine

What they did was to remove the injector on the #1 Cylinder, and the knocking, smoking went away. So they thought it was the injector.

Well, what they think is that the injector over fueled the cylinder, causing the damage.

Hopefully I will find out something next week.
