Our there any Lift Pump failures in 2000 and up Stock trucks?

In the year 2000, Dodge changed the lift pump in our trucks to Part number 3990105. I believe this is the newest lift pump. I was wondering if anyone with a "STOCK" truck has had a lift pump failure with their 2000 or newer stock truck? If you have please post and tell us the part number of the new lift pump the dealer installed. I would also assume that if we don't have many posts it means that this new pump might of been the solution for failed lift pumps on stock trucks. I know it is a whole other story on Bombed trucks :D
 
My lift pump was slowly dying at 35k, so I replaced it last weekend with a new one from Cummins (#3990105). Replaced the banjo bolts with drilled-out bolts at the same time, pressures are really great, now. I don't know how much longer the pump would've lasted, but I was seeing 9# at idle, and 3-4# at WOT.

My truck had a 1-01 build date. Mother Cummins tech rep told me it had the #3938367 pump on it which had been superceded in 5-01 by the 3990105, which I bought a few months ago as a back-up. So far, the original pump is showing very strong numbers on my guage.
 
I have a 2001 stock HO truck. I took delivery in March of 2000 so it is a fairly early model. My lift pump has been slowly declining over the last 10,000 miles. I have an appointment to have it replaced and will update the post with the part number used.



Since I have taken delivery of my truck, I have noticed at least 4 new revisions for this pump. I think that the key poster on this data has been Steve St. Laurent. It seems that there IS a problem and DC is trying to address it in the cheapest manner possible. My question is, when there is a lift pump failure, to what extent has this shortened the lifespan of the injection pump?

Big Toy: the poor engineering of our lift pump location has not been solved. My pump died at 14,500 miles while the truck was still stock except for guages. [production date 1-01]

I don't know the part # of the replacement pump. I'm adding a pusher pump at the tank to feed the factory lift pump.



The problem is not the pump, it is the location. Most vehicles today have a [submersed] pump in the tank. And they usually last just about the life of the car or truck. When working as a mechanic, I very rarely had a bad submersed pump, and only if the fuel had been badly contaminated with water, or rust.



Our truck's pumps SUCK the fuel from the tank. Electric pumps don't like to suck, they like to PUSH the fuel. Only relocating the pump to the tank will make this a non issue. Why DamnNearChrysler won't do this I can't fathom. It's not adding any parts, just a slight change in production. But I suppose they don't replace that many VP44 pumps under warrantee, most injection pumps probably fail after 100K, and we pay for the replacement.



I'm installing a pusher ASAP to keep the latest factory lift pump alive.

That is strange?? The 3990105 was indicated as the lift pump installed on all 2000 and newer CTD trucks. This is even indicated on Fritz's web site. I wonder if any other members have a 2000 or newer truck with the old lift pump on it from the factory? Did you see the old lift pump and did it show part number 3938367? Maybe your tech made a mistake? Maybe Dodge kept putting on the old ones until they ran out? Anybody got any ideas?

I posted that message on 8/15/01 and according to sources at both Cummins and D/C (engineers, not parts guys) the 3990105 pump (05080885AA for the D/C part #) had only been available for a few weeks as of that time. I had talked to them about a month before I posted that thread and they had the 3990105 part # at that time but said that none were available in the chain and they hadn't been yet, they were listed as status 80 (Cummins speak for a part that will appear soon). Given that I was talking to guys directly responsible for these issues I trust their knowledge. I do know that I bought a lift pump towards the end of 2000 and got the latest rev pump at that time, it was revised two times between that time and the 3990105 pump. At one time I had all the superceded part numbers written down from the time my truck was sold (June 98 build) to the 3990105 pump, I can't recall exactly but I believe it was around 13 revisions!!

My original factory pump is still on the truck, so I don't know what it's part number is... ... but, like I said, the Cummins rep. said it was a #3938367. Hopefully, I won't be checking it out soon.



One other thing. I have a #3990105 in it's original box, and I can't find any numbers ANYWHERE on the pump or the box that look even close to #3990105 :(



This whole lift pump thing gives me a headache.

Wow, looks like these are running changes to the pump, or should I say sprinting changes. I don't think a company makes this number of changes if there is not a problem. It would be nice to know what they are changing in these pumps??? Is there anyone at DC or Cummins that we can talk to that will tell us what all of these revisions are about? I will check my pump at the next fuel filter change. I will also get a FP guage before my warranty is up. It just pisses me off that I have to buy a guage to monitor a part that should be reliable. It would not be so bad if it did not affect the health of the very expensive injection pump.

Don't Wait!

Big Toy: don't wait to install a fuel pressure guage. Your truck may not give you any indication that the pump has failed.

Even checking that the pump is pumping fuel into the filter canister is not a valid check. The pump may fill the filter canister, but not provide positive pressure while the truck is running, or at WOT.



My pump went from 15# at idle and 11# at WOT to 8# at idle and 0# at WOT overnight. The truck ran fine, but I babied it until I could get it to the Dealer for a replacement.



Running the VP44 with 0# or -psi fuel pressure will damage it, and the damage may not kill the pump for a long time, or it may damage it in just a few hundred miles. There have been several posts on this site where a truck starved for fuel, either with a failed pump, or no fuel in the tank, and a few weeks later the VP44 failed. It's not a coincidence.



For a stock truck or a modified truck, a fuel pressure gauge is a high priority item.

While I had my truck in for coolant service at Jim Cogdill Dodge in W. Knoxville today, I asked them to check the fuel pressure as a precaution. They told me they were getting a lot of failures on the transfer pumps.

When I returned to get the truck, they advised they had replaced the pump with a new one due to low fuel pressure at idle ! The pump part no they used was #5080885AA

The truck had been running fine and the mileage was only 29000.



While I had it there, they also re-flashed the PCM with TSB 18-015-00 Rev A for the cold engine/fast idle update ! If we get another cold spell I'll check it out.



Other guys may complain about their dealers, but these guys are great!
 
I don't think relying on a pressure gauge reading using a gauge that must be hand held and can only be read while the hood is up and the truck not moving is a good idea. When I installed my pressure gauge, everything was great. 14 psi @ idle and no lower than 9 psi WOT. After a few months though I noticed that every so often the pressure would drop to 2 psi @ idle and down to 0 psi while driving. I thought it was my gauge set up because the next day the pressure would be fine again. Then it kept happening more and more. After wringing out my fuel pressure gauge set up, I found that it was working fine and that my lift pump was intermittent. I took it to Dodge and it worked fine for them, but on the way home it went to 0 psi again. So I called up Dodge and they said if it doesn't do it for them, they can't fix it. I wound up replacing the pump with the latest and greatest from Cummins myself and have had fantastic fuel pressure ever since. I guess the moral of this story is if you don't have a fuel pressure gauge installed, you don't know what your lift pump is really doing. Taking a reading once in a while is better than nothing, but your not getting the full picture. My 2001 ETH had 25,000 miles on it when I had this come up and the truck is stock with the exception of a boost, EGT and fuel pressure gauge setup.

Mine started to fail with less than 30k on the clock. This was before any mods, and before gauges, so I can even tell you what the pressures were. I know it sounded very ill when priming before start, and would stumble badly on heavy throttle accelerations. They replaced it under warranty without question.



Part number on the invoice is 5015723-AA



Under "description" on the invoice is "Pump Fuel 14073001" whatever that means.



Haven't had any problems since. Idle pressures are around 13 after the filter.
 
I looked up the Auto-meter guages on the site and the pro-comp ultralites are $275 !!

Is that the price for these or is there another scource that might be cheaper?

Also on the guy making the 0-30psi guages, I would be interresed in one if they ase the same as the Autometer in styling.
