If your going to do some ATV ridding your better off the go on over the hill to Silverton (22miles) There is good 5er hook up and much better ATV ridding and more beautiful country. Check with George (Bud) Foster at the Grand Imperial Palace hotel in Silverton and he will give you information on some of the best ridding in the state of colorado.

Tell him Walt, from the Thunder Mountain Wheelers ATV club in Delta said to contact him. Our club just spent 3 days there last week and have been going there for several years. He also can recommend or even make you a reservation at a camping place.

Make sure to do the hot springs while there. That was the best thing about Ouray the last time we were there. We are going back next month--great area.

Ouray

There are three places there, 970-645-2551, 970-325-4418, and this one is 4 mi. N. of town, 970-325-4523. Lots of good trails in area, go to Jeep rental place and buy map from them. bg

Walt is right on. Having lived in Silverton for a number of years, it is definitely the place to go over Ouray. BTW Walt- my family used to own the Grand Imperial until Foster bought it about 10? years ago. I had alot of fun pounding the rocks up there and running the Hotel in the 80's.....

As far as RV parks - Ouray itself has none right in town, you'd have to stay a bit south- closer to Ridgeway. There are two that I know of there, one I think is a KOA.

In Silverton, there are three. Two of them are very small and not great, the Other is Silver Summitt RV park- nice place. Reservations highly reccomended as they typically fill up. I don't think the BLM allows it any more, but you used to be able to dry camp off the dirt roads on the way to Animas Forks, north of Silverton.

If your heart can handle it- take a lood into Black Bear pass over to Telluride.  It's a serious kick... .....

If you stop in at the old Hotel, tell Foster the "Marlin's" say hello;) .

If you need any other info on the area, let me know.

We have been to Ouray probably 10 summers out of the last fifteen. , We have stayed at all the campgrounds there, but now we always stay at the KOA. Friendly people, great foods and CLEAN facilities!!!

As said, don't miss the pool and take a tour of the mining museum, we don't have a clue about manual labor these days! Its right downtown. a block off the main street. If ATVin is your thing, we have stayed at an old town site, I think it was Georgetown, about 7 miles up the road from Silverton (between Silverton and the ghost town of Animas Forks).

There are no buildings anymore other that a tall small brown building by the road. DOn't know what it is. Across the road is a large waterfall. We have dry camped there several times and you can ATV or Jeep from there. It is a beautiful spot! Nothing like lounge chairs, a cold one with a campfire in the evenings! Don't plan on doing the Alpine Loop on an ATV, you can't get thru Lake City, they are banned there.

We never get tired of the Ouray/Silverton area!

Thank you fellas!

I knew that I could count on you. I'll take a look at Silverton. I want to stay at a nice campground. I'll let you all know.

Thanks Big A

One thing to remember on the roads between Silverton and the trails. They are marked with signs that say no ATVs past this point. The park rangers are serious about that and will ticket you if you are riding on the road.

I was up there last summer with a group and saw several ATVs get tickets because they ignored the signes.

Ouray does have a campground downtown. It's about 2 blocks west of the main street in the middle of downtown and across the river. We stayed there in April this year. Full hookups including cable and laundry.

Land shark-

I think the name of that one, or used to be, is 4J+1+1. We stayed there a long time ago. At that time the city and/ or county dump trucks would roll thru there on the main street that cuts thru the camp ground at about 6 am. Course back then, we were in a tent and you could feel and hear them, maybe in a RV its not so bad. But, it was a nice place and you can walk across a bridge and be at the hot pool.
