Outside Ambient Temp Sensor

It seems as of late my outside temp gauge has been reading a little higher than what's going on outside, even when the truck has sat all night and is cool to the touch (engine).

I located the sensor (underside of hood) next to the hood clasp/latch and it appears to be well sealed.

Anyone have problems w/ these gizmos? Hopefully they last AT LEAST AS LONG AS A FUEL SENDER?

It seems that you have to go down the road a few miles before they read accurately. Ive noticed as well that,after sitting all night,its not reading properly. Once the truck is moving air is circulating around the sensor and it will be within a degree if not exactly reading as per the weather report on the radio station.

I just had mine replaced under warranty. At times it would be stuck on one temp. It was stuck on 46 one day when it was in the 20's. #ad

The sensor,at least on the 12 valvers,takes a reading once per minute. When you shut down the temp is stored and diplayed for one minute after you start up again. Thats what you're seeing,it's the temp from the evening before.

Mine has never seemed to read properly. Seems like it is always 7-10 degrees warmer than it is. I think that it is getting heat from the radiator, because of the mounting location. I have throught about relocating the sensor. Anyone have any ideas?

Mine seems slow to react also, much longer than 1 minute. It does seem to be accurate after a few minutes of operation. I have a Taylor 2° increment thermometer and I have checked several times with good comparisons. The delay in reading correct seems to be longer with the onset of colder temperatures. I am watching it, this may be a warranty item!

Read more in the manual about the thermometer,it says it takes 5 minutes after start up to read correctly,will display the previous shutdown temp for 1 minute. The display shows the average temp over a one minute period. Mine always reads high when I have my winter front installed.

Mine would intermitently read incorrectly, and long after many minutes passed from start-up. Once this year, when I was camping, the temperature was a steady 63 the whole weekend! #ad

Also, if a snowplow is on the truck the reading will be WAY high. #ad

And if you have a snow plow on, and Lund winter covers, and are towing 8K, it gets REALLY hot (115 deg). But the engine stayed right at 190. #ad

On my 97, mine always red about 5-8 deg. warm from day one. I replaced the sensor,(located below the left headlight area, behind the bumper) but no change. I played with it quite a while, then moved it straight UP as far as it would go and secured it behind the top edge of the front bumper, and I feel kike it's deadly accururate now. It was picking up warm "prop wash" from the fan. I took it loose from it's factory loction, and moved it straight up as far as I could until it's wire was tight, and screwed it in place. You might try that, I know they are in a different loction on later models, but this fixed mine.

Mine always reads the correct temp, but I do have to drive for a little while first to get it to register the correct temp.
