They have to constantly keep the air/fuel ratio around 14. 3:1 on a gas burner and that's why it's not as efficient as a diesel because a diesel is a natural lean-burn engine and can run lean with no problems? 100MPG car? Maybe, but how long did the engine last running it that lean? Probably not very long.
