looking at new work truck

Checked my mileage this morning and it was 300,753. The history of this truck has been pretty well documented on this site, the only thing that has happened lately was replacing the drive shaft u-joints (2) and a couple of weeks ago I had a front wheel bearing go out at 297,100 miles on the road and went ahead and replaced the other one about a week later. The truck is still running great and I wouldn't worry about going anywhere in it, it's as sound as it was when it was new, probably more so because it is good and broke in. It has spent its life pulling a 40 ft goose neck around in the oilfields. Will be doing more of the same at daylight tomorrow. I have a complete log of all repairs and and work done on the truck since new. There haven't really been that much considering the mileage and what the truck does.

I could just imagine what that log would have on it for repairs, if it was a PS/DMAX. Glad to hear it's still working for you. :)

Yep, that would be good for a laugh. I doubt anyone has ever actually run a Sick. Ohh Furd that many miles. It would have consumed three engines with that mileage.

Congratulations, EB. I'm happy to read that report as it is very good news for the life expectancy of my C&C. Keep those reports coming.

IIRC, the only expensive repair you've had was the routine maintenance requirement of a new DPF when the old one filled up with soot around 225k.

Nice documentation for all of the "naysayers" stating they purchase Dodge only because of the CUMMINS. Many on here "generalize" that the Cummins lasts forever... ... . but the rest of the truck falls apart around it.

Looks like Dodge is indeed building a great truck and also looks like their OEM suppliers provide decent parts.

Keep up the documentation, EB!!!!!! :D

That reputation came from the worn out presses and dies from a 20 year 1st gen production. The CTD was the first step to modernizing the Dodge Ram, and the 2nd gen took the industry by surprize. If you take a close look at the compitition they copy something from the 2nd gen platform. Ford has even gone too far with the new 2011 truck, the grill is bigger than the truck and unless its chrome its ugly. The compitition has to have a name in the model, to make it seem better than the D/C. "Powerstroke" whch is all over Ford trucks, and "Duramax" to make it seem durable which is anything but durable. I knew when my 2nd gen and 3rd gens trucks where purchased, it was worth the investment and I'm not even considering my 92 Dakota 318 V8 into the picture, which was the best small pickup I've ever owned. I also owned a pre 1st gen truck which I bought used for $500. 00 with 150K on the odometer, and beat the crap out of it, and sold it for 500. 00 when I was threw with it. :-laf

I am in the same camp as you are. I am sincerely impressed with the durability and longevity of the Dodge platform as well as the Cummins engine.

We wouldn't hear of the million mile Cummins engines in Dodges if the Dodge platform wasn't capable of making the million mile mark also.

Well Guys, my '06 3500 SRW rolled over 200K last night coming home. View attachment 76508

My question is... ... ... At 100K I changed the trannie and diff to Amsoil lubricants.

Now 100K later, should I change them again?

Maint. history: One clutch, one A/C compressor, one front end alignment and 2 sets of Michelins until I installed the Ricksons with 19. 5s. Still running with original brakes. Use FG Stratapore filters change oil and filter every 10K. (about every 2 months)

Truck is still tight... ... ... ..... !

Barry, I see in your sig, that you have lots of miles on the manual trany's, what is your opinion on the G56 over the NV5600? And whats your opinion on the quality of the different trucks you have owned? Sorry for the change of subject. :)

I am not sure that I can answer your question. All of the trucks I had were great. No trouble from any of them. Up until now, the one I drove the most was the little '01 3/4 ton... ... ... ... . 96,000 miles.

They just kept getting better and better. However, in my '06(present truck) I got one of the early G56 trannies and the OD is 0. 79 which is almost like running around with 4:10s even though I have 3:73s. Installing the Ricksons with 225/19. 5s helped a little but when I buy my next set of 19. 5s, they will be 245s... ... ..... should level me out where I want to be.

The only thing I have done to the G56 is a tail cone seal at 102K and changed to Amsoil fluid.

Hope this helps... ... ... .....

If it were me I would change them again, but the only way to know for sure would be send a oil sample in to be analyzed.

Did the switch to Amsoil have any effect on shift quality? I am running Royal Purple now.

Barry,

I would change both. I used a 100k service interval on my '01 w/NV-5600 and a 100k service interval on the differential in my '06. Fluids always looked good when they came out.
