Hi,

I have a 03 2500, I'm one of the few people who actually reads the vehicle owner's manual cover to cover. In the manual they warn of a situation called "over speeding" during downhill descents while coasting. I'm real clear on what that means exactly, I'm guessing that your supposed to remain at a reasonable speed, but not coast too long by staying on the gas? When I asked my "5 star" dealership they not only didn't know what I was talking about, the service manager told that he wasn't familiar with the manual for the 03:--) . Can someone please enlighten me. Thanks

I think that when you coast at high speed the auto churns up the atf and creates bubbles which is harmful to the transmission. At least that is what i have been told.

I belive this apply's to standard shifts more than auto's. If you were going down a long decent with a standard truck in gear and the downhill speed increased enough to put the engine into the redline that would be "over speeding". Auto's don't do that since our trucks will unlock the tourqe converter and coast down the hill.

Although I have never tried it personally, if you pulled an auto transmission down into 2nd gear while doing 60 mph you might "overspeed" the engine.

Yes overspeeding refers to engine RPM. Like Rosco said it's shifting down too far and forcing the engine deep into the Red Zone. Obviously the governor cannot do anything in this situation. If you love your truck and want it to run faithfully for 500,000 miles then you don't want to do this.

Don't do what this Rocket Scientist did in his Acura RSX (too bad the pictures are no longer there but the story is hilarious): http://celica.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=6;t=009656
