I just changed the oil for the first time. Before the change the oil dipstick showed the oil level between full and add.
It took 12 quarts to bring the oil level up the full line.
Did I overfill by 1 quart?
I put about one quart in the filter before installing it.
The remained of the 12 quarts went into the engine.
Should I carefully add 11 quarts next time and recalibrate the dipstick?
The manual says the filter holds 1 quart and the engine 10 quarts.
Help, I need HELP. #ad

Mine is a 97, and the owners manual says the injector pump will retain about a quart of oil for an hour or so when you drain the cranckcase. If you do a "quickie" oil change on mine, (which I don't) it will only take 10 qt. s plus the one that's still in the pump, to fill it. If I let it drain overnight which I usually do, I put in a full 11 qt. s, but several times have just dumped in the entire 3 gal. with no problem. A lot of the guys on this fourm do 3 gal to start with, instead of having a qt. left over they may or may not have to add between changes anyway... ... ... DDG

I just changed the oil im my'00. I put in 10qts plus filled the filter. After running it to check for leaks, the dipstick showed a quart low. I added about a cup. The next morning the dipstick showed it was a cup over. Also the injection pump on the 24 valves are not lubed by motor oil anymore. Cheers, bilford.

I checked it several times the day I changed the oil. I'll check it again tomorrow morning.

Thanks.

My 99 takes 11 qts and if I check it just after I've ran my engine to check for leaks the dip stick will show a quart or so low. Remember that is a 40weight oil and very thick and takes a long tome to drain back to the oil pan. If you put 11 qts in and check it the next day it should be on the full mark. If your oil is hot wait an hour or so to check it to get an accurate reading. I alwase check mine in the morning after it has sat all night.

Hope this helps

Don

I always use the full three gallons of Shell Rotella-T in my 5,000 mile oil changes. It puts it right on the full mark every time I check it. I change the oil after the truck has cooled. It does not spill out of the filter that way and all the old oil is in the pan. I have 112,000+ miles on my '96 model and have changed the oil right on 5,000 mile increments, with Mopar oil and fuel filters and no problems with using the full three gallons.

bmann,

I'm one of those guys who "dump" in 3 gallons and go. I buy Delo 400 15W40 in gallon jugs and it's easier than trying the 11 quart ordeal. I've been doing since 1992, 2 different Dodge/Cummins and no problem. I'll do my new Y2K the same way if it's ever delivered.

I read somewhere along the way that Cummins said overfilling won't hurt. You may find a low power problem. Oil splashing on the crankshaft counterweights? I remember on an old D-8 I ran you had to check the oil with the engine running.

I think the 12 valve engines are 12 quart and the 24 11 quart with filter. I think that is where the change is.

The oil level in my '99 was on the Full mark (top line of Safe zone) the day I picked up the truck new and was still full at first oil change. Always checked the oil after it sat overnight. Let dealer do first change and they put in a total of 11 quarts (owners manual says 10 quarts). Next morning dipstick showed a quart over the full mark. Dealer was no help in resolving this. Checked dipstick number and I have the correct one. Talked to Cummins and they said to fill the filter and add 8 quarts to crankcase, run the engine for a few minutes and then let it sit for half hour or so and check it and add whatever it took to get to the Full mark. Oil level was in the middle of Safe zone so added another quart. Now at each change I use a total of 10 quarts. I also let the engine coll down for an hour or a little better before I drain and pull the old filter so the skin stays on my fingers. Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticken' to it.

It's just my suspicion, but, having once "braincramped" the whole 3gal into the engine, (i simply forgot to save the last quart),, cummins probably engineered in a bit of "oops factor" into the safe total fill volume. these engines are used worldwide, and i bet some of the guys who deal with them get oil by the liter instead of the quart, and can't read any better detail than "11" and "15w40" (not a "furriner" jab, just absence of manuals written in all possible languages)---11 liters would be approx 12 qt. ---was no problem when I did it, and some of the other guys seem to do it on purpose---donworraboudit--rm

When I was shopping for trucks in the fall of 96, I picked up some literature at the Cummins shop in wichita. I have a "B-5. 9 175 HP" specification sheet. It shows an oil system capacity of 17. 3 U. S. quarts, but this is no doubt for industrial, farm or commercial applications, our trucks have smaller pans, and 11-12 qts should be Ok either way... ... ... ... DDG

Well it looks like I'll have to drain out a quart of oil.
I just check the oil level after an overnight rest and the oil level is 1 quart high.

To add to this and confuse more... When i did the first filter change I posted that I broke 3 wrenches and had to use a chisel and "beater", no oil on gasket. Whell, when I changed the oil the utter day, got a breaker bar and "assistance bar" to remove the drain plug (if one hard, 2 even harder). While putting the breaker bar in the plug, it started to unscrew!!! Wasn't more than finger tight. Better check your new units for this problem (gud thing it never leaked).

Just my 0. 02$ worth... .

Ben,

Same here. The oil drain plag was very loose.

Are these loose oil pan plugs a result of a dealer oil changes or your personal work? Is anyone using a torque wrench? Is this happening only on the new trucks?

I torque my model year 2000 pan plug to the specified 44 foot pounds. It was snug from the factory and has never loosened between changes - three so far.

I can't imagine a properly torqued plug loosening.
