Oil Stain

What am I doing wrong here. This my second oil change at 7500 miles, first was at 2500 miles and I'm using the Stratpore filter. I've read that it takes 12 quarts to fill the engine. My first change I put in 12 quarts and the dipstick showed I was over the mark by a 1/2 inch. Second oil filter change I put in only 10 quarts and got the same overfill. I drained all the oil out to the point of a trickle. I've done oil changes for 40 years, this is my first diesel.

Also, I'm not loosing any coolant.

I use the 1 - 2. 5 gallon jug and a half of a 1 gallon jug = 12qts.

Is it possible the dipstick is not the correct one?

1st : absolutely level ground. Next, 12 quarts with filter, run 2 minutes, wait 1/2 hour for oil drain back, then check. Some trucks only take 11 1/2 quarts. I don't know why. My truck has always shown slightly over full after change. It doesn't seem to have hurt. 315,000 miles so far.

Yep, thats what I do. I even check the next day before first startup. I don't think it will hurt anything either, just curious as to why it shows overfill.

It sounds like you may not have let it drain long enough - 6. 7 requires that you let it drain at least 20 minutes in order to get all of the oil out of the crankcase vent filter. I usually start mine draining, then go check about 100 other things on the truck while it drains. An hour or so later, I've replaced the filter and then the drain plug, and then I fill it up. 12 Quarts goes right to the full mark.

I forgot to mention, my 04 reads different on each side of the dipstick. I think it has to do with the curvature of the tube holding some residue. I insert the dipstick with the handle upside down to make it easier to read.

Really, 20 minutes! I let it drain out until it's just a sliver coming out. It's not 20 minutes, maybe 5-7 minutes. Next time I'll let drain for 20 minutes and see. Thanks for the tip!

I rotate the dipstick too!

It's just something the 6. 7 does. I've let it drain. It still shows high after a oil change. Next time I'm going with 10 qts and add to the mark.

They drain a lot better with the oil fill cap removed, mine takes 15-20 minutes to fully drain, and after 3 gallons of oil and a filter shows about 3/8" over the full mark

I've always removed the filler cap and pull the dipstick halfway out, it makes it flow out faster.

I have a 6. 7L also and the way that I drain the engine oil is too use a Fumoto Finger touch valve easier to open and close. I take an oil sample first if needed usually every other change since base line has been established. I slide a large capacity oil pan under the engine and open the valve to drain oil from the engine; I also open up the fill cap in the valve cover. Go inside and have my lunch 30 min later I check to see if the oil has stop draining. Some small drips are still present. Leaving the valve still open I removed the oil filter by now the drips have stop.

Close off the valve and install a new clean dry oil filter then proceed to fill up the engine with 11 ½ quarts of oil. Run engine to warm up oil and check again after 30 min's to allow for drain back and then fill as need to the full mark. This is about two hours of total time it takes for an oil change but this way I know it is level and correct.

I spoke yesterday with a tech at the dealership who is close friend was looking for advise on the 6. 7 and oil change came up in conversation. His comment was to always remove the filler cap before you ever open the drain plug. Reasoning was if down the other way around by the time you got from under the truck to the topside to undo the filler cap that the draining oil had formed a vaccum and trapped oil in the topside passages, to the tune of about 1. 5 to 2 quarts.

The Fumoto valve was one of the first things I bought along with the Genos Garage filter kit. It comes with 3 Stratapore oil filters and 2 fuel filters. I keep 1 of each in the truck just in case something happens while camping. You never know. ;).
