Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) OverFlow Valve Spring Orientation?

I took my overflow valve apart just to get familiar with how it works. I noticed that the spring was tapered, or more correctly, looking down through the center of the spring, the opening on one end was smaller than the other. Just wondering what would happen if someone did not notice this and put the spring in upside down? And if so, what would happen in terms of operation?

Assembled backwards ... the ball won't seat correctly . . thus a loss of pressure.
