Just saw the reply to a no power problem. Overflow valve for 29. 95 ?? I have a '95 and Cummins quoted me a price of $237. 00 !! Part #3963593. Held it in my hand and thought what a rip off. Even the counter gal at Cummins Cal Pacific was amazed at the cost. I know it's a precision part, set to open at 22psi per factory service manual. But $237? What's the story on the ones for $29. 95?

Yep... . that's the one. Why does Cummins charge so much more? I could see a Dodge dealer doing that, but Cummins?

Gary, have you done any upgrades to your 47RH? I posted a question today re. 3-4 upshifts.

Glad that's the right one. I didn't check other sources for cheaper prices, but Geno's is usually very competitive.

As far as the 47RH, I had it rebuilt at around 170k miles. Rebuilder supposedly used HD parts, new valve body, and a TransGo shift kit. The shift kit really made a difference - crisper shifts. I replaced the steel lines and hoses with hydraulic hoses from a local hose shop. I also added a much larger transmission cooler.

I recently had the output shaft bearing at the rear of the transmission replaced. It was really howling and could feel it in the transfer case shift lever. I thought it was the transfer case itself, but they checked it and found it was in great shape. They did recommend I start putting a few bucks back for another transmission rebuild though. I currently have 299k miles on the truck. Hope this info helps.

Thanks for the info Gary. Did you upgrade the torque converter also? If so which one did you go with? I've always felt the factory converter on the 47RH does a real injustice to our trucks. Maybe I'll start a new post on that subject "47RH Converter".

I took mine apart and stretched the spring a tiny bit, put it back together and checked the release pressure with a blow tip on my air compressor set at the pressure I wanted. Just don't stretch it to far or you will ruin the spring

I too have seen them on ebay for that price but was unsure if they were genuine BOSCH or not. I asked and the guy said it was. I recently got one for someone from PDR for $55.

I also called Cummins and was quoted just about that exact same price. I was so blown away I can't even describe it. I even verified that the guy was looking at the right part. That is so INSANE and a HUGE rip off. There is no way it costs anything near that to make, which is obvious since you can get them for $30.

Grinder1,

did the overflow valve fix your no power problem?

If it did,was your fuel gauge reading normal presure, or low?

also low power but thinking the OFV can't be the problem cuz my

fuel gauge reads good pressure

Help me out here guy's - this overflow valve, is it part of the P7100 pump ?

Anyone have a pic of this valve on the pump ? Thanks...

Here is a picture of mine when I was doing a head gasket: Picasa Web Albums - Mark - Truck Stuff

Look at the lower right corner where the fuel return line comes off the pump. The overflow valve is right there holding the return line to the pump. Its a banjo bolt with spring loaded check valve inside it that maintains a consistent fuel pressure in the P7100 pump.

The ones on Ebay are $29 shipped. .

they are Bosch and are as good as any

LOTs of people have used them and say they work great

I only have an opinion, no knowledge

BUT I haven't read any complaints about them at all...

Not sure why the huge variation in cost,

maybe because cummins sells so few, their price has gone up exponentially???

:-laf

I think your overflow valve could still be bad with good fuel pressure. The pump is putting out good pressure but the overflow valve is returing too much fuel. Someone can correct me f this is wrong.

If the overflow valve is bad you will have low pressure. yes its returning too much fuel which is why the pressure would be low

No need to remove. since they call it an overflow valve it makes sense what you said but the way this overflow valve is engineered into the system it doubles as a pressure regulator

barngal 6, fortunately I did not have a "no power" problem, just a "no start" problem. Needed to replace my fuel transfer pump. A while back I had made a mental note to check out buying a new overflow valve to have on hand if the original bit the dust. As Dave M noted, a faulty valve could return too much fuel. Logic tells me that would be a bad thing under high load conditions. I guess we need to hear from a Bosch P7100 expert for the exact function of the overflow valve. Anyway while I was at Cummins getting the transfer pump, which BTW is made in China #@$%!, thought I'd get the price and availability on the overflow valve. Glad I was sitting down. $237 buckaroos ! Then I found out from other members that Geno's has 'em for $63 and eBay for $30. TG for this great TDR group!

IF streatching the spring---0. 055", this is just a nats hair over 1/2" Idle pressure should be 20-22llb and 30llb @ 2,000 rrrrrs. FYI
