Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 94 studder in 2-3 shift

I have 1994 1 ton dually reg. cab 4x4 and it will soon become stationary due to getting a new truck. The 94 has had a hard life and I want to make it my project truck. I want to make it like new. It has 205,000 on the engine and a newly rebuilt NV4500. I want to treat the frame with POR15, rebuild the engine, while replacing the pump, turbo, injectors and things like that. I don't want a sled puller, but I do want a moderate to extreme performance tow rig. It basically will be sitting still, so I will have the time and money to do the in-depth stuff. Of course I will send the engine out to get rebuilt. I am thinking of swapping to the NV5600 though. My question is: Is there a thread or post on pulling the motor on a 94. How hard is it? Anybody else done something similiar to what I want to do?

Thanks. Oo.

I may not rebuild it, but I am going to remove the engine so I can just give it the once over, paint the engine and engine bay, be able to get to everything easier. I might get it rebuilt, just because it is out and have the money. I know that it is a Cummins and has alot more in her though.

The most I would do is a head gasket, fire rings, and head studs. No need to do a rebuild unless you want to put in some 215HP pistons for more power potential. Sorry I cannot help on what is involved in pulling one. It does not look fun.

I had looked at putting an ATS stage 2 injection pump on with ARP head studs on one of their fire ring heads and then some sort of injector and an upgraded turbo or compounds. I do not know who has better pumps and compounds... ATS or Industrial Injection. Where can I find out more info on the 215 hp pistons?

Also can an upgraded NV5600 trans like from ATS be bought and then a NV4500 to NV5600 conversion kit be bought and installed on a 94? I had looked at that direction.

From my searches on here, the 215HP pistons have a cast top ring land, and the top ring is moved slightly lower away from the heat. As far as power, I would look into a marine piston or possibly an aftermarket type for even more power. If it were me, I would not go in that far unless the engine actually is worn out.

On ebay you see a lot of recon 4BT's which scares me a little, but all in all I think the most common cause of death on these are the KDP's and the oil cooler jets falling out. If these 2 things are stopped, I bet they could run 1M.

Yeah if I pulled a motor I'd go ahead and go through it just to have it reach its full potential. There are pistons with both compression rings having steel lands, and you can also install a gapless second ring from Sealed Power for even better cylinder sealing. Balancing everything to within a gram or two will really smooth it out too. Throw in an aftermarket cam, do a little head porting, add studs. . . you'll end up with a good runner.

where can I find out about where to get the pistons, how much they are and maybe a website. Also the balancing your talking about has to be done at the machine shop that I would take the engine to.

I've always said if I pull the engine on the 95, I'm gonna cover everthing I can with sheet lead, firewall, transmission tunnel, side of block, oil pan and anything else that'll hold still.

I'm thinking the old truck is getting louder all the time.
