I've read some posts about how people see they are getting only 5MPG while doing smokey burnouts and such. My computer display does not update like this and I'm wondering if different year trucks update differently or is something is wrong with mine.

A good example is when towing my camper over a weekend or something it continually (but VERY slowly) deducts MPG calc a fraction at a time so by the end of the weekend it may display 13. 5 MPG; while I started out the weekend (from running empty) at indicated 16. 5 however, calculating at the pump though I get say 11MPG (towing). Then come monday morning it will be all off again from having towed and will take a week of driving back and forth to work (empty) to get it close to accurate again.

I guess I'm a little confused as to what good this thing does if it takes so long to update. It'd be nice if it would calc every 5-10 gallons rather than a tank or 2.

Have you reset it to zero lately?

After I reset mine, the MPG changes pretty quickly.

It displays an average MPG since last reset, so the more miles you go without a reset, the slower the readings will change.

You know I've only tried a couple of times (when I first got the truck) I played with it and if I remember right I don't think it let me reset the MPG value. It let me reset the "time-to-target" feature, I recal'd the compass, and automatically resets the DTE at fill up but I will again try to "zero" the MPG

Get it to MPG display, then hold both buttons down at the same time for a couple of seconds.

That should reset to zero. ;)

I think the later trucks have an instant MPG and an average MPG.

MY '99 owners manual says it "Shows the average fuel economy since the last reset or the last 30 gallons of fuel used, whichever is the most recent. "

Just put an edge box on, then its so far off the only thing its good for is to show the wife how good the mileage is since that last mod. ;)

Well it did let me reset it (I must've just pooched it earlier on). Anyway, it for sure doesn't instantly update but was much faster than before. It look about 25 minutes to come from 0 to a semi-realistic reading of what I was getting running down I-15.

Thanks guys!

p. s. mine reads about 3 MPG high (even with 245/75 tires on the wheels).
