I haven't posted in a while because my truck just runs and runs well with the Smarty. About 2 months ago my temp gauge started getting jerky and would show the truck run hot and then pop back to OK and then heat up and then pop back all within a few miles.

Another 07. 5 manual was doing the same thing and they ended up replacing all of the hoses, fluid, thermostat and water pump. Before replacing he parts they would stop the truck and let air out of the radiator when it starting acting up. The truck would go back to a normal temp for a while. When the temp gauge would act up they repeat the step above.

Well, I started going through letting air out. Then we replace the thermostat which was bad with another bad cheap one. While replacing the second thermostat we replaced all 4 hoses and the fluid. Within 250 miles I had boiled all the water out of the radiator again.

So, anyone else have or seen this problem? Know the fix or the issue?

Smarty is running 21ME on setting 1

Hello Caveman, I experianced the temperature fluxuation with my 96' 5. 9L 12valve. I had must had the Cummins Northwest shop do a complete tune, clean the radiator, intercooler and transmission cooler, install an new thermostat, new accessory drive belt, new hoses where needed and new antifreeze. When I recieved the truck back I noticed that the temperature would swing drastically from 220 degrees to the cool line on the gauge. It would slowely build up and drop drastically. This would take about a minute to cycle. I checked the water in the radiator and the coolant tank and found they were both up to proper levels. I took it back to Cummins Northwest and complained of the problem. They checked it and found what they believed to be the problem. The cooling fan clutch wasn't declutching was their conclusion, that and the fact that the thermostat was located high on the engine promoting the cycling. I'm not sure if this helps or not.

Have you had the egr cooler checked. Mine was blowing the coolant out the overflow tank. Dodge dealer said it had a blown head gasket and replaced it. I had the same problem within 30 miles. (I pull a big trailer) The egr cooler was replaced and that solved the problem. If you are still under warranty push hard to have that done. I posted about this when it happened several years ago.
