I just did a fuel filter change and did the starter bump one time and the motor started right up and promptly died. I had to bump the starter probably 8-10 times more.

I was wondering if bumping the starter many times can be a bad thing ??

Something that also seemed a little strange was that I had 15 psi at the VP44 during the LP cycle, but only 12. 5 after the truck finally started. I know FP will be a little lower when the truck is running but I didn't think 2. 5 psi of difference though  .

Having to bump the pump that many times seems like alot to me but I have another trick to use to save that trouble. If you prefill the filter resivor with clean diesel before you put the filter in you don't have to bump it but one or two times. I have a little 2. 5 gallon jerry can that I use to do it.

As for overheating the pump I doubt it as the lift pump uses diesel to lube and cool itself when it runs.

Also the drop in pressure seems about right to me. When I bump my pump I see about 14-17 and when the truck is running I see about 12-13.

That's about what mine does. Although I usually have closer to 13. 5psi at idle. Hopefully it will all change with the Wildcat Maxflow system. :D I also prime my cannister to the top of the threads on my 99. I usually re-install the brass plug and just fire it right up. No purging needed with the cannister already full. JR2, Love that air horn setup. Just what I need for removing the annoying Uncle Bens coffee can special from in front of my truck in traffic. :D

JR2... This may seem like a silly question but... what method do you use to get clean diesel in to the filter cannister ?

I bought two filters and tried to pour diesel from my can through one of the filters and in to a mason jar. It didn't work to well ( I didn't want to spend 2 hours pouring a tiny stream of diesel so that it wouldn't just run down the side of the filter and in to the jar without going through the filter first ). So I closed the valve on the cannister and just put the new filter in.

mcoleman... what brass plug are you speaking of ??

Jeff

Your truck probably doesn't have one as they changed the fuel filter cannisters. The 99s have 2 plugs in the top of the cannisters. I removed the post filter one permanently and that's where my fuel pressure isolator is now at.
