While towing my 5TH wheel at highway speeds for approximately an hour and a half, heard a muffled pop sound then the CEL light chimed and came on then power de rated. Truck is stock. Pulled over and it died, managed to get it restarted on the third attempt and limped home. It set two codes, P-242-f and P-1451. The day I took it to the dealer it seemed to run better, they checked it out and cleared the codes and reset the CEL. Said they couldn't find anything wrong, everything was within specs. Truck runs but has black soot in the tail pipe and when you get into it you can see smoke coming out the pipe. Never had it before in seventy eight thousand miles, that pipe was clean. Dealer tech said my ash load in the DPF is at 12% and everything checks out. Could there be internal damage to the DPF (a regeneration that went haywire) that doesn't show up? It just doesn't run the same. After seventy eight thousand miles you just get a feel for things. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If it's cracked internally , which I assume it is, I guess it could test OK. Which unit is it in the exhaust system, just before the muffler or after the turbo?
Thanks Bob4x4.

Reviving this post,
Hope you considered not replacing the dpf due to the crack. As long as the I/M's are in the active state and there's no codes you'll pass the smog test. I'd run it that way until the ecm starts to have fits (if it ever does) and then replace it. I ran mine cracked/melted for months until I could convince the dealer to replace it under the Kalyforrnya emissions warranty.
In retrospect I should have just street tuned it and left it the way it was. Only reason I did was I was coming up the north bound truck connector from the 5 to the 14 and had to really punch it to avoid the commuters and pass some trucks. I guess mine had a pretty big crack in it as I blacked out the sky (and the trucks behind me) and pushed for the replacement. I should have tried tuning it to see if it made a difference in the soot out the tailpipe before it was replaced.
BTW, which side of the valley do you live? I'm up a ways on Soledad Canyon past Sand Canyon.

At the top of Whites Canyon. Took the DPF off and cleaned it, found nothing wrong no cracks and not a lot of soot. Also cleaned the EGR valve again, it had some soot but not much. Noticed a soot trail across both mounting gaskets on the EGR, how long it has been leaking I can only guess. I did however replace the three sensors attached to the DPF. Have taken the 5TH wheel to the lake over Veterans day, all went well. Get a touch of smoke out the pipe but seems to run fine, go figure. No CEL. Would like to talk about it, PM. Thanks for the input.

xcc_rider,
sent you a PM yesterday with my phone #. Will check on this end to set up my PM system.
Still don't know for sure why it all happened or if it's fully corrected.
