Dodge is junk!

advice on bed mat for slide in camper

I've got a pigeon problem. There's too many of them, and they roost at dusk, when their silhouettes blend into the background. This is a decent tactic, used by many armed forces and police personnel.
Well, guess what I found!!!
Daisy (that's right, the airgun people!) now market a laser sight for low-recoil weapons, such as a . 22, or an air (naturally) . 177 so long as it's got a 3/8"dovetail on the receiver...
Installed it on the old Powerline Model 977 this evening, and got it 80% zeroed before it got too dark. The roof pigeons already hate being "lit up" #ad
... Will fine-tune it some more tomorrow afternoon. That rifle was originally designed for 10m target comps, and I've had it since I was 17. Still shoots a 1" group @ 30m. (would probably be tighter if I used a benchrest every time) That's good for a headshot on a roof pigeon, but the "deathdot" in the eye makes him fly away. #7900 - Accu-Laser® Sight $49. 95

Provides laser technology at an affordable price. Designed specifically for airguns and . 22 rimfire rifles and pistols, the Accu-Laser® puts the shooter on target fast. Fully adjustable for windage and elevation. Fits any standard 3/8" dovetail mount. Comes with three replaceable SR-44 Alkaline watch batteries (up to 2 1/2 hours of continuous use).

Here is what a P. E. T. A. person is:

WHEN SHE GOT BACK TO HER RURAL HOME AFTER PARTICIPATING IN AN ANIMAL-RIGHTS
MARCH IN WASHINGTON, D. C. , MY FRIEND JOAN LET HER PET CAT OUT INTO THE YARD.
TWENTY MINUTES LATER SHE WAS SHOCKED TO FIND THE CAT RETURNING WITH A BABY
RABBIT IN ITS MOUTH. REMOVING THE RABBIT, JOAN PLACED IT IN A BOX, GRABBED
HER CAR KEYS AND HEADED FOR THE ANIMAL SHELTER. ON THE WAY SHE ACCIDENTALLY
HIT A SQUIRREL. SHE STOPPED THE CAR, PUT THE SQUIRREL IN THE BOX AND WENT ON
TO THE SHELTER. THERE, A WILDLIFE WORKER TOLD JOAN THAT HE COULD DO NOTHING
FOR THE ANIMALS. "BUT I'M GLAD YOU BROUGHT THEM IN," HE SAID. "NOW WE CAN
FEED THE OWL. "--Contributed to "Life In These United States" by Frank

rich, maybe if you just shine the laser in their eyes long enough they will go blind and not be able to find their way back.
I use this stuff called Stick Em. It has a consistency of Vaseline but is extremely sticky. You rub this on the place they roost and I've watched, they land in it for a second then fly off and go crazy trying to get the stuff off. They never come back. Not as fun as the Daisy though.

Try either feeding the birds rice or alka selzer. #ad

Rice or alka selzer will blowt them up till they kick the bucket.

Wow! Now that I have DBR’s password, I can get on this site and respond whenever I find that I have something to say (what he doesn’t know won’t hurt him)! Usually, not much on this site interests me; I could give a rat’s behind whether the cam plate is too far forward or what the torque is (unless it is of a concern to DBR. In such situations, I am all ears…gotta be a supportive and understanding significant other!). I am, after all, a member of the female species and tend only to care that the truck gets from point A to point B, and that it gets there in one piece, but when I saw the reference to PETA, I was intrigued.
When I was still in vet school, PETA took advantage of an open house and somehow gained access to restricted areas. They released (stole) laboratory animals and not only destroyed six years of one of my professor’s studies, but released domesticated animals accustomed to scheduled feedings and warm, cozy bedding into the cold of winter to freeze to death without any food or shelter. How is that any more humane than what my professor was doing? His research was, ironically, minimally invasive (until the end of course when the animals were humanely destroyed and necropsied). Those lab animals had a much better life than most purchased for children’s pets. Sure the child ensures that the mouse has fresh bedding and food for the first few weeks, but soon the newness wears off and the animal eats less often, drinks water fogged with algae and develops respiratory problems secondary to the burning stench of urinary ammonia that accumulates in the soiled bedding. If I had my way, I’d stuff the rice, alka seltzer and the like into the mouths of PETA fanatics…bloating like that is too horrendous a death for a pigeon.
Being a vet, I have heard the whole gamut of methods of animal disposal from very effective and humane, to not so effective and tortuous (I will not go into it here…don’t want to give anyone any ideas. Some are sick!). If I had a dime for every time someone responds to the price quote for euthanasia with “Well, dang, a five cent slug will accomplish the same thing,” I’d be very rich indeed.
I must say I agree with Illflem, Stick Em is a humane method to employ to deter pesky pigeons, but it is also a great way to get everything else to stick to your roof (ie. pine needles, leaves, cows after a tornado passes through, etc. ). If you are a good shot, shooting the buggers can be a humane means of population control, as well as entertaining…you should see DBR run to the gun safe when he hears the crows approach! :d

Rich,

I too once had the pigeon problem..... I had the critters roosting in my apt complex on these beams that hung over my balcony, and they s--- on my furniture and barbecue. I had a . 22 that a pal and I bought in high school--old bolt gun, very accurate; there's this ammo out there called "CB"s... CCI and Remington make them. Wellllll, if ya live in an area where trajectory isn't a problem, "CB"s, which are subsonic, make less noise than my RWS pellet gun... I used to open a window or door just about an inch or two, then step back, way back (no sound getting out), then pop mr. pigeon thru the crack. One problem: . 22 CBs will go thru a gallon milk jug filled with water! The pigeons, if not hit just right, used to fly off and die in mid flight... . "daddy, look at the dead birdie in the tennis court!" I quit after that... ... ... #ad

there's a little bit of a P. I. T. A. design problem on that sight... needs self-locking "clicks" for zeroing. . here's the flaw that I'm not liking.....

windage and elevation are adjusted by slight rotations of 2 little dedicated Allen-head plugs, at, naturally 90* angles to each other, which move the lens of the laser accordingly... this, in and of itself is not a bad thing. The flaw (in my mind) is that instead of the laser being pushed into some firm, but flexible lining, and thereby held steady, it's finally "locked" against a 3rd Allen plug that's at 135* to both of the others (diagonal)---because of this odd-angled 3rd clamping plug, a windage adjustment alters an elevation, and vice-versa... It's becoming quite the project trying to get it zeroed to the level of precision that the old peepsight allowed. I might "BOMB" it with a blob of silicone rubber injected thru the lock-screw's port. that might be firm/flexible enough for a good, reliable (surgical placement) sighting-in... . for $29. 96 at WalMart, 39. 99 at K-mart and 49. 95 direct from Daisy's website, it's still a "cool" gadget, but needs help for sniper work... .
Subsonic rounds with a silencer would be very stealthy, but maybe need hollowpointed or cross-cut to prevent that pass-thru effect. (geneva convention does NOT apply to pigeons --read "rats with wings")

Dr. Mrs. DBR----good statements! and I do believe in a humanely executed dispatching of my winged nemeses (proper spelling for plural of nemesis??). IMHO a headshot delivers best of 4 worlds...
1. Bragging rights proportional to distance!
2. Bird never knows what hit him
3. The nerve-floppage is mildly entertaining #ad
, and best of all,
4. If he dies up on the roof, he's like a species-specific scarecrow. . the others avoid the area for a week or two when there's a dead one there.

Rich, LMAO!
Only problem with leaving them on the roof, you might wind up with bigger birds. Namely large black ones.....

Maybe the farmers out there have seen this one. It's a pistol that launches/ignites what look like M-80's. I was told the farmers use them for bird control. We used one to wake up the gaurd at work! #ad

We used to plunk big ol rats near the Agana
airport on Guam with a BB gun. We'd sit in
a Nissan Sentra with limo-tint windows and
leave a window cracked. Used popcorn to chum
em out of the shadows of a dumpster.
Good way to pass the
time and reduce the spread of disease to the
human population. #ad

I think that if i utilized a $90 sight on a (originally) $48 rifle, i will truly have crossed the line from annoyance to obsession... However, there are medications to mask the symptoms and give the appearance of normalcy for the benefit of my neighbors' real-estate values! #ad

Those are just night sights the trijicon acog reflex is only $350. 00 then you could go into tirjicon acog scopes starting at $870, best part of a weapon is always the sights and scopes
