Just a quickie for those more in the KNOW than me - What are the differences between the '94-'95 engines and the '96-'98(12V) engines? I know the later ones are the more desireable, but is it just for higher stock HP ratings or are there other "BIGGER" things I am not aware of? I have also been on the lookout for a Frootliner donor (their HP ratings are higher, and the pump for the air brakes is a nice bonus) but I want to be sure that I am getting what I want. Ideas? :D

One thing is that there are physical differences within the injection pumps which make the newer ones more desireable. The 215 pumps from the 1996-1998. 5 manual trannies are the most desireable.

OK- found myself a table with all the HP ratings, CPL #'s, etc. Thanks for the replies - I see the pump differences. Only question left is this- Would a simple pump change on a '94- '95 be enough to make it like the later motors, or are there other differences? Cam profile? Lift pump? Turbo? Would it be worth playing with an earlier motor if I got it cheaply enough, or just better to get a later one (been looking for a while, NOT in a hurry)? :D

Cummins upgraded the pistons (rings 10 mm instead of 8 mm down from crown), and camshaft (ground and shot peened behind #1 bearing so it won't crack at higher rpm) on the 215 hp. also a bigger damper was used on higher hp versions--for more rpm safely.

I saw in an older TDR issue the approximate HP potential for the 160s was around 330hp, 180s gave you close to 400, and about 550-600 for the 215 pump. Conservative numbers I would say, and I think Joe D wrote it ;)

Thanks very much for your input fellas - That was the kind of info I was looking for. I am going to continue to hold out for the right deal on a '96-'98 engine. :D
