I was wondering if it is possible to get the p-pump 180 off.

I figured I would install my gsk kit while the pump was off the engine.

I understand the timing tab and I have it centered.

Should I go past the tab once or just bring it back to center?

It is certainly possible. The pump pin should be in when the #1 piston is TDC on the compression stroke. If it is 180 out, leave the pump pin in, pop the gear loose and rotate the engine.

No. As long as that tang shows in the window of the pump and you lock it with the plug your fine. Just make sure your engine gets timed by the pin and your off to the races!

in a word yes you can be 180 out. however if the pump is pinned it is the engine that is off. probably you are on #6 compression, you need to be on #1 tdc compression.

on the back of the timing cover is a pin that slides in the cam gear, its a pain to get to though, what i do is roll the engine over in direction of rotation, till the crank and cam are lined up exactly. then pin the pump and install the gear, make sure nothing turns while your torquing the pump gear nut. that will time it to factory. to advance the timing do the above except installing the pump gear. roll the engine back up to one tooth. each tooth is 10 degrees of advance, typically half a tooth is plenty. this is not an accurate way of advancing the timing but works.

to propperly advance timing you need a dial indicator and special tools to measure the lift on the number one injector pump, also you need the specs for relating lift to degrees of timing. its very accurate but a pain in the butt. i have had much success with the quick and dirty method of just rolling it back and locking it in.

There are semantics involved but as long as that tang is locked in the window of the pump it is timed. There is only one tang, it cannot be 180 degrees out. The engine needs to be at #1 TDC when the pump is installed of course.

What kind of upgrades/mods are you doing to the truck while it's down?
