This atf 4 is wierd. It goes from no leak to pouring in seconds. Few months ago the box and pump self destructed with metal in the fluid.

New box from napa and new pump from autozone

Now yesterday the pump was pouring atf4 from the front shaft:eek:

All is good for now with free lifetime replacement pump and 4 hours of cussung:-{} with my self under truck lastnight.

I DONT LIKE ATF4 it poured out of my transfer input seal last week before we replaced that.

It there a non synthetic fluid we can switch to?

I'll probably get blasted for saying this, but I've never had good luck with ATF as a power steering fluid. I only use the fluid labeled specifically as power steering fluid in all of my vehicles. There are really good ones and also really average ones. Personally, I use store brand psf. Mainly, because there's no filtration in the system, I like to change it pretty frequently.

If you're having regular failures, there are several factors that could be contributing.

1. Shoddy parts.

2. Contamination left in the system from previous failures.

3. Misalignment of parts or incorrect installation. Doesn't a 3rd gen have the pump driven by the serp belt? How are you installing the pulley? Is the pulley straight?

I really doubt that the ATF+4 is causing any problems. I would really look at contamination. Especially with the repeat seal failures that you're having.

Are all brands of atf4 synthetic or some dino non syn?
I would like to try something different for a fluid.
I dont think the atf 4 is causing the trouble but it just seems to be thin and really leak in buckets and not ever a drip or warning.
Just complete failure with pouring out 6. 00 per qt fluid on the ground.
Pully is going on and off per specs with proper puller.
Pully is running straight.
Pump is bolted to bracket straight.
System was flushed many times per shop manual after last failures.
Im sure its pee poor reman pump from autozone.
Im glad work is slow because im so busy rebuilding this truck.

I think that you will find some (not all) PS fluid you buy in the store is just ATF+4 in a smaller bottle...
