Hey Guys,

I'm new to the web site and glad to see so many other RAM enthusiasts. I have a problem with my 2004 RAM 3500, 5. 9 Cummins. 30,000 and problem free until I took it into the dealer for the 30K service. Three days after service I have rough cold starts that smooth out once engine warm. Next morning REALLY rough and I get the check engine light. Take to the dealer who tells me it popped a P0088 High Fuel Rail Pressure Code. Dealer clears code and sends me on my way. Next day engine stalls while warm and pops another P0088 code the next morning. The truck has been at the dealer for a week now and they haven't figured it out. Any suggestions? I asked about a fuel sample today and they tell me it was clean.

J,

I just got mine back from the dealer an hour ago (same model / year / engine as yours). Mine had the same code, plus few others, and similar behavior. Dealer performed two TSB's, one is called TSB 18 and apparently is an ECM reflash having to do with the Cam Position Sensor, the other was a fix related to the possibility of water entering the ECM connector down on the lower drivers side of the engine block. I only drove it home a few miles, so I don't know that is fixed and that they didn't just reset the codes - which they do when they don't know what's wrong - but it is worth a try.

You might have them check the overpressure relief on the common rail. If it blew open (I think they can tell according to what I have read) then you have a real rail pressure problem. Otherwise you have an electronic problem related to the measurement of the rail pressure, rather than the actual rail pressure itself. It's just a thought in terms of steering your diagnosis in one direction or another...
