Truck has 84,000 miles with 90% towing a 11,000# 5th wheel. About a week ago the exhaust brake stopped working (going down a big hill (of course) on the El Paso loop), but was OK after the next restart. A few days later I got the check engine light and found the P00AF code which showed as permanent. Truck was still driving OK except no exhaust brake. Yesterday, after a lunch stop, the truck would only get up to 35mph, so it was decided that the only option was to limp into Barstow, CA, about 30 miles away. Found a RV park a few miles from the dealer and called the dealer to request service.

Dealer did diagnostics today and found P00AF code plus a nitrous sensor code. They ordered a new turbo (in tomorrow), but may not have time to install it for a week or more. The good news is that MaxCare Extended Warranty will cover the $6000+ repair, 5 days of rental car (if they can find me one), lodging (at RV park) and meals. Really glad that for the first time in my life I bought an extended warranty!

Next is What to do in Barstow? Train and car museums are closed. Did the walk around downtown to see the may Route 66 murals - very nice. Any ideas?

Wow Cummins12V98's mileage is about the same and his just failed also. Barstow is one of those middle of no where - don't want to get stuck places. At least there is a RAM dealer.

My vote is for number 20.

I would much rather we suck in Bakersfield that Barstow. One day would be up the Tehachapi to see trains do the 360 degree loop!

comrade sno - just watched a couple vids on that loop. VERY COOL. never heard of that place before.... cheers! :)

I have been by the area many times, however always been towing the RV. Would really like to see it in person. I to have watched videos. The Tehachapi is a very scenic route, with less traffic than the Grape Vine. When we come down via California we switch over to 99 South of Stockton, 58 West, 14 to the South side of Palmdale(E Ave S), 138 to I-15, 215, 210, 10 to Arizona. We have done this route both directions many times. I have a saying "This Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona route has help 20 miles ahead or 20 miles behind you. Where as the Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona route has help 100 miles ahead or 100 miles behind you. With my wife's recent medical diagnosis we are going to sell the small travel trailer and the RAM truck this spring and her son is going to bring down our 2020 Ford Edge ST for us. It will be a lot easier for me to get her in and out of the SUV.

Third day in Barstow report. Here's what we've found to do, so far:
Downtown murals are worth a walk around.
Calico ghost town - tourist stuff.
Barstow train museum is highlight so far. It's closed, but worth a visit anyway to see outdoor exhibits. Found out what a 'Harvey Girl' is. Look it up.
Liberty Sculpture Park and Eddie World (huge candy store) in Yermo.
Mad Max cars next to our RV park -Shady Lane RV Park.
Peggy Sue's Diner in Yermo - don't bother.
Oggi's Brewery and Pizza - excellent.
Roy's Cafe in downtown Barstow - good basic dining.
Barstow Outlet Stores - Not my cup of tea, but wife wanted to go.

Will check in with Dealer tomorrow (Monday) and see if parts were delivered and get updated repair timeline.
