engine and trans runs warmer

P0245 code came up after installing new Bd exhaust manifold (2piece) with new exhaust gaskets to fix an exhaust leak at cyl no.6. My truck is 2009 2500 4x4 with 78,000 miles, stock emissions. EGR cooler cleaning done last summer at 68,000 miles. Searched many forums for solutions on the p0245 code, this egr system is proving to be really finicky.

P0245 is the wastegate solenoid error code. It usually means (if the solenoid is OK) that there is a short in the wiring harness. I think you can check the voltage at the solenoid and see if it as 12 Volts, ignition on and engine not running. You may have pinched a wire during your install. Also, check the connector at the solenoid and make sure it's clean. If not, clean and use some di-electric grease on the connector pins. So, the first thing to check is the wiring harness and make sure no wires were broken or shorted.

I had a close look at the wiring harness and the connector pins, all appear in very good shape. I measured 12v at pin #3 (key on, engine not running) on the connector. I removed and cleaned the soot off of the egr temp sensor, and egr pressure sensor. Put in a new air filter as well.
P245A came up almost immediately at engine start up after the BD manifold install. I drove the truck several times hoping that the system needed to adjust to the new manifold. The BD manifold internal geometry is slightly different from stock. After driving around code P245C also came up.

I did some other voltage checks on the connector: pin4 is ground. At key on (engine not running) measured 12v at pin3, at pin 2 the voltage jumps from 0.4v (key off) to 4.8v at key on. Pin 2 is the signal voltage from the ecm. At pin 1, which is the status signal from the egr valve motor to the ecm, the voltage is 12v constant at key on. I believe the ecm is looking for a return signal voltage between 5 to 8 volts at pin 1? I deduced that the egr cooler bypass motor is faulty. I am waiting on a used unit from a friend's garage that does deletes on dodge trucks. Hopefully this will solve my P245.

These egr cooler bypass valves are only available from dodge stealerships. I am not sure if available directly from cummins. You have to replace the whole unit, egrbypass motor with the control cables attached to the elbow casting with the flapper valve. Too pricey $$$ to buy new.
